ABCDE assessment is significant in helping the patient stabilize after the operation. The assessment is also intended to detect any complication that might result from the procedure. Patients are assessed to enable an operating department practitioner (ODP) ensure that the patient regains the ability to function normally after the procedure. It is recommended to conduct a complete initial assessment followed by regular re-assessment. Based on the initial evaluation, treatments are given to keep the patient stay alive.
Airway
The ABCDE assessment postoperative would be necessary for the patient in the case study. Airway assessment should be given the priority because the patency of airway is extremely imperative since airway obstruction is life-threatening. This involves the examination of the whole body. As ODP I will take the clinical history of the patient and review the patient’s notes. The temperature of the patient should also be taken. I will also examine the whole body for any injury or rash. There is the need to ensure that the patient’s dignity is maintained while conducting this phase of the assessment. Furthermore, I will also ensure that all the findings of the assessment and the interventions are recorded.
In conclusion, ABCDE assessment is crucial in ensuring that the post-operative patient or critically ill patient stays alive. The assessment focuses on various systems whose impairments are life-threatening. ABCDE assessment is conducted systematically beginning with the most urgent phase. In this case, the assessment focuses on the following in order or priority: Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, and
