Abortion Argument Essay
“We're always going to argue about abortion. It's a hard choice and it's controversial, and that's why I'm pro-choice, because I want people to make their own choices.” -Hillary Clinton. Abortion has been a contentious argument that has arisen in the United States over 2 centuries ago, and has been an fiery debate ever since. Citizens and politicians have been faced with two different arguments: one side, pro- choice, states that women should be able to choose the fate of their fetus, while the rebuttal, pro- life, asserts that all fetuses should be given birth to. When a woman is pregnant, it will affect her body, personal health, and future; women should be given the right to have an abortion to preserve herself and ensure a valuable, respectable life for the child. Three out of ten pregnancies are unhealthy and cause damage or death to the mother. Additionally, scientists have proved that fetuses are fully dependent on the mother, relying on her for food, nutrition, and more. The fetus draws energy, time and nutrition from the mother carrying the child, and all others involved. It is wrong for a woman to have her life changed so dramatically with no say on the matter. Without the mother, the fetus wouldn’t be able to support itself on its’ own, and would die. Many pro- life followers believe that abortion is murder, but the fetus fully relies on the mother so it wouldn’t be able to live on it’s own. Thus, the carrier of the fetus would have a different life and future that may negatively influence both of them, making it better to prevent both of them from living a bitter life. Studies have shown that the chance of dying from birth is thirteen times higher than having an abortion. The fetus will drastically change the mother’s physical appearance along with her future; it would be a major change in the mother's life so she should have the right to do what she desires with the baby.
Women should be given the right to have an abortion if they are raped, or have made a bad decision that may change the woman's and baby’s future for the worse.
When a women is raped, their bodies are violated without consent. Having a child whose father despoiled them may give them bad memories, and the mother may never love the baby and treat them poorly. In this situation, a fetus would rather be aborted than given a horrible, abusive lifestyle where the mother couldn’t bear the sight of the child. Some may say that adoption is a viable alternative to having an abortion; but studies in Russia and the Ukraine show that 10- 15% orphans with no family or home commit suicide before they are 18. In this study it also shows that 60% of these females become prostitutes and 70% of the boys become hardened criminals. These children would be given a wretched lifestyle with no happiness. Children shouldn’t be punished for their parents’ bad actions, and would be better off aborted than being given an unsound lifestyle. Women know what would be best for themselves and others, and if they feel like they they will get or give a life of hardship, they should have an abortion.
Making abortion illegal infringes on our rights. In the case Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruled abortion legal because privacy extended to unborn children. States have attempted to pass laws to make abortion illegal( against Roe), but they have been declared unconstitutional. The baby is a part of the mother, so
the baby would be considered the mother’s and making abortion illegal would infringe on the baby’s privacy. Making abortion illegal would contravene our individual rights as citizens.
