Lincoln won the election in 1860 and was inaugurated as president on March 1861. But the southern states did not want him to be a president. They did not agree to his policies so they began to leave the country. The first one to leave was South Carolina and six more states followed. This all happened when he won the election but before he even took the oath to office. Then, a civil war began on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter in South Carolina just a month after Lincoln took office. He ordered an army from the northern states to defeat the south. 600,000 thousands people lost their fight to this war. Lincoln faced many struggles but he managed to hold the country together. On January 1, 1863 Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This freed the slaves form the 13th amendment. Today, Lincoln is remembered for his Gettysburg Address. Later on, he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while he was attending a play in Washington D.C. He died the next day on April 15, 1865.
