Sex Education, should it be taught in schools? Many debates have been argued over this subject. Some may say that sex education teaches students about how sexual intercourse is done, thus destroying the mortality of people. Although mortality is lowered by sex education, it should be taught in both secondary and primary schools because it gives children and young adults the idea of what is right and wrong, teaches about sex outside of marriage and sexual diseases, and is more effective than abstinence classes.

What abstinence classes teach is not having sexual intercourse outside of marriage and it also excludes other kinds of important information such as, birth control and safe sex. The government has always favored the idea of abstinence classes because they are always funding it. “More than 1.5 billion in federal and state matching funds have been committed to abstinence programs. Even though this is true the federal government keeps on funding these programs. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, “The Department of Health and Human Service conclude that the impact results from abstinence education programs show no impacts on rates of sexual abstinence” (National). Also, according to Pro-Choice Wisconsin, “Research shows that comprehensive sex education is more effective than abstinence- only sex ed, but federal government is funding the latter” (Pro-Choice). This means that even know they know what it is not effective they are still choosing to fund to fund these types of programs. :curricula contains misinformation about condoms, abortions, and basic scientific facts” (pro-choice). Why would a parent want their kid to be misinformed about their own sexuality and sex lives? Abstinence based classes emphasizes on not having sexual intercourse before marriage, but many teens are likely to do so due to curiosity, the overload of hormones, and the influence of the media. Because the natural desires of teens today, parents should be encouraged to talk to their children about how to properly protect themselves from sex.
