Abstinence only programs don’t always appeal to 100% of the class. There will always be some people who do not take the pledge of abstinence. With abstinence only education, these people who do not take the pledge, are not entering the world of sex with the proper knowledge to be safe. They were only told to be safe if abstaining. Abstinence only education isn’t a program to reach everyone, it is a program that aims for certain groups of people who have decided to stay abstinent but does not apply to or educate those who have not taken the pledge. Abstinence only education only teaches kids to wait to have sex, but it does not teach them how to practice safe sex when they decide to engage in sexual intercourse. There are also kids who decide to break their pledge, and when they do, they are much less likely to use contraceptives (Lowen), resulting in a much greater chance of pregnancy or transmission of STI’s.
