INTRODUCTION
Studies have shown that the impact of bullying in all forms on the mental health and safety of adolescents is of particular interest, especially with new methods of bullying due to such high usage use of new and modern technology. The purpose of this research was to examine “the relationship between victimization from both physical and cyber bullying and adolescent suicidal behavior. Violent behavior, substance use, and unsafe sexual behavior were tested as mediators between two forms of bullying, cyber and physical, and suicidal behavior.”
METHOD
Participants
Data was taken from a sample of 4,693 students from public high schools, who were involved in large risk-behavior. The ages ranged from 12 to 20 years old with an average age of 16.11. 47% of the sample was females while 51% were males.
Procedure
Participants were asked questions on a survey anonymously about the types of activities and/or behaviors they were involved in outside of school. Death and Mortality statistics were also taken into account when making theories and conclusions about the correlations between bullying and suicide rates among teens.
RESULTS
Suicide appears to be the third largest cause of death among teenagers. Findings show that adolescents that have committed suicide within the last decade have gone a very stressful amount of bullying around their environment. About two-thirds of cases where young people committed suicide can be traced back to bullying, especially cyber bullying. There is also a strong relation between substance abuse and bullying. About 83% of the teens studied had some sort of relation with illegal substances. Also physical violence appears to lead to more physical violence among teens.
DISCUSSION
Cyber bullying appears to be growing
