The media can impact corporate behavior and corporate social responsibility of the firm. It not only mirrors a firm’s actions, but also constructs an image through feature articles and editorials, hence having the ability and capacity to impact the opinions and beliefs of many stakeholders. For those stake holders who lack direct communication with the firm, the media is the only source of information. Hence, that is why most corporations lean on what the media reports about them. Since transparency is valued by all stakeholders, ADAC published the company’s approach and performance of the sustainability activities in its “2011 Sustainability Report”. The Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) established that the report accomplishes the requirement of Application Level B . When compared globally, only 33 % of UAE companies release their CSR activities.
According to a survey conducted by Nielsen in the UAE, 49% of buyers are eager to reward companies that are socially responsible. Even if a company charges high for their goods and services, consumers are prepared to spend more, as long as they are socially responsible. Since its commencement in 2006, the Abu Dhabi Airports Company has been positively acknowledged for its operational excellence, marketing, training and corporate responsibility initiatives by the local community and international as well as local organizations.
After assessing 12 million passenger experience surveys, the Airports Council International (ACI) named Abu Dhabi International Airport the “Best Airport in the Middle East”. They demonstrated the biggest improvement in operational productivity and efficiency and quality of services offered to customers in the region for 2012. The award showcases the company’s relentless commitment to improve the quality of service and the satisfaction of the consumers, as it moved up in ranks from second place in 2011 to the first in 2012.     Purpose – This paper seeks to investigate the influence of government and foreign affiliates, particularly; multinational companies on corporate social reporting (CSR) development in an economy, where CSR awareness is low coupled with weak pressure group activism. Design/methodology/approach – This is a cross sectional study that focuses on the information contained in the annual reports for year 2002/2003. This research uses content analysis as method to measure the extent CSR. Findings – Based on regression analysis, the study evidences on the impact of government influence. However, the impact of foreign affiliation variables is not evident. Institutionalisation of the government’s aspirations and commitment to CSR is perhaps the most appropriate description for Malaysian CSR practice. Research limitations/implications – There are two main limitations of this study. Firstly, this study examines the annual reports for one year. Secondly, this study is annual reports centric. It does not examine any other stand alone reports that the respondents might have produced on the subject of society and the environment. Practical implications – This study provides justification for government’s role in promoting CSR practice. The impact is evidenced although there are no direct concerted efforts at that time by the government in respect of CSR policy implementation.
