Abuela Invents The Zero Summary
Our actions can either make something better, or worse. In the short stories “Abuela Invents the Zero” by Ortiz Cofer and “Home” by Anton Chekhov, both main characters had things going on that changed their lives. Constancia (Ortiz) has made her grandmother feel bad about how she is. Seryozha (Anton) has been smoking at the age of seven. Although both characters don’t go through the same thing, however, they end up with the same problem. Constancia and Seryozha both end up making their lives worse all because of their actions. Constancia actions messed her up and her grandmother, because she was saying rude stuff about her grandmother and her grandmother got offended. Seryozha started to smoke, since he started to smoke, he started to hurt …show more content…
Constancia was judging her grandmother for how she looked and how she got lost at church. “It is January, two feet of snow on the ground, and she's wearing a shawl over a thick black dress. And that’s just the start,” states how Constancia was judging her grandmother. Seryozha on the other hand started to smoking and no one cared when they found out. “I can picture the little cherub with a cigarette in his mouth,” indicated that people started to find out about Seryozha smoking but no one really worried about it. Later on throughout the stories, the characters slowly start to do the same thing. As you can see, both characters did something and people didn’t care neither did they. Therefore, some actions are not affecting us right now, but they will later …show more content…
Constancia didn’t like her grandmother and would say how ridiculous she looked. This is stated in the text when Constancia has to take her grandmother to church “So since she’s only four feet eleven inches tall, she walks around in my mother’s big black coat looking ridiculous.” Later on, Constancia got in trouble with her mom and gets sent to her room. “That’s when I’m sent to my room to consider a number I hadn’t thought much about-until today,” states how she got sent to her room to think about what she had done. Seryozha started to take his father's tobacco and smoke it. Later on, Seryozha gets in trouble for smoking his father’s tobacco and for smoking it in the first place. “In the first place, you ought not to take tobacco that does not belong to you.” states that Seryozha has been taking his father’s tobacco, which he’s not supposed to. Notice how at first, both characters said or did stuff they weren’t supposed to, well now all that is affecting them at the end of the story. Going back to the beginning, both characters go through different situations, but end up with the same problem. Constancia hurts her grandmother's feelings and makes her feel like she’s nothing. “You made me feel like a zero, like a nothing,” indicates how Constancia made her grandmother feel worthless. Seryozha starts to smoke and he is ruining his body as stated in the text “Your chest is weak, you haven’t reached your full

Something else that is significant to this novel is Mama Elena’s struggle. Mama Elena also suffered the pangs of lost love due to her mother. Thier pact consisted of taking into consideration the fact that it was vital to Rosaura to maintain the appearance that her marriage was going splendidly, and the most important thing for her was that her daughter grow up within that sacred institution, the family- the only way, she felt, to provide a firm moral foundation. She does not to be next to her grandmother, stated in paragraph for “ i plan to stay very busy the whole time she’s with us so I won't be asked to take her anywhere.” and the way she explains her grandmother makes it seem like she doesn’t want to be around her as well. Like in paragraph 11 when it explains “ the sight of her little head with a bun on top of it sticking out of that huge coat makes me want to run back into my room and get underneath the covers. I just hope no one sees us together.” this a great explanation of who Constancis feels about her grandmother. She feels embarrassed. She later on is sent to her room to think about what she has done and how she made her grandmother…

After Tom nearly died, several times, he realized that he was doing life all wrong. It was not until he went through this traumatic experience that anyone could get through to him. As humans we make mistakes, but the real power is learning from our mistakes. Often we can learn from others mistakes that way we don’t have to feel the pain ourselves to understand why we shouldn’t do something or be a certain way. Also we can learn from history and past mistakes that lead them into bad times and disputes. From literature we learn morals and lessons through the characters position. “We live with our archetypes, but can we live in them?” rightly said by Poul Anderson.…

On the other hand what you say can have different meanings, and what you do can change the way you’re stating something. Furthermore, the quote is similar to “Abuela events a zero”, explaining how Constancia promises her mother she’ll show her Abuela respect, but instead her actions show the opposite. When Rosaura was first invited to the party, she thought it would be “ ‘the most lovely party in the whole world’ ” because Luciana believed that it would be (Hecker 1). She was so excited to be invited and be a part of the scene. Regardless of the fact that “Rosaura won the sack race” and that when “they played tag” she was the fastest, she was not entirely treated as well as the rest of the invited children (Hecker 3). She truly believed that she was really someone who Luciana wanted in her life and that she finally had friends that appreciated her, but instead Senora Ines, at the end of the party, made Rosaura question what went on that whole entire day. Rosaura let her happiness become bereft by someone who she truly respected, and that was what hurt her the most. In Phase’s case, he was nonchalant about all that was going on around him in the beginning. However, after realizing what had happened to him, he was starting to regret ever following those women. He was absolutely not looking forward to “looking after [the children]” the rest of his life (O’Neill 1). His cockiness in the beginning of the story triggered him to thinking that he would be the one “to help with the whole ‘having children’ thing” and led him to be completely deceived in the end (O’Neill 1). Phase did not think that these women were horrible…

They live in illusions, with the memories of reality in the past, similar to 1984, where history is important to accepting of their reality. This play shows how characters distort truths to accept the fact that they cannot understand each other. Amanda alludes to her past, and is untruthful to herself in order to cope with her reality. She cannot understand her children's’ ways. As a mother, she remembers her youthful experiences, and longs for the same for her children, Tom and Laura. When talking of her past, she has an elated diction, happier than that of when she talks of the present: QUOTE AND EXPLAIN. Her past has become an illusion and is not the truth of her reality, yet it influences her language. Amanda was outgoing in her youth and desired much attention, differing tremendously from Laura. The language when she describes her lifestyle is a zealous tone, showing excitement and eagerness for her daughter to feel the same. She often tries to live vicariously through her daughter, in denial of the…

Every day we are given a fresh start; another chance to move forward in our lives and accomplish the things we thrive to achieve day to day. A new day can also liberate us from our past mistakes and provide us with a chance to change our ways. We are all faced with misery and misfortune at points in our lives, some more than others. We must recognize that it is not the burden in itself that shapes who we are, but how well or how poorly we deal with the difficulties. Sometimes misfortunes can be seen in a negative light; because it seems unjust, therefore we response in a negative matter, and become negligent to change. Overcoming tragic events is what truly counts, for we are meant to live happily and in acceptance that there are things that we cannot change. In many cases, individuals seem to feel as though they’ve lost an amount so great that they are unable to free themselves of the pain. This perspective often leads to further suffering. A Temporary Matter by Jhumpa Lahou and Kiss Me by Andrew Pyper demonstrate a loss of identity, negligence towards communication, and eventually leading to the destruction of a relationship.…

In both the novel “Things Fall Apart” and real life we face choices and consequences. Sometimes we make choices that will benefit us and others around us but sometimes we make mistakes that can affect our whole entire life. Blaise Pascal says in “Pensées” “In each action we must look beyond the action at our past, present, and future state, and at others whom it affects, and see the relations of all those things. And then we shall be very cautious.” And maybe if we are very cautious, we will make the right choices and have fewer…
