In the book the Giver gets an emotional bond with his receiver in training named Rosemary. As he was training rosemary, he only gave her happy and uplifting memories for a very long time, and when Rosemary received a bad memory she applied for release. After the failure of Rosemary the giver had to change his methods so Jonas was ready or brave enough to receive a bad or painful memory. One of his new methods was to give a painful memory early in his training. Different from Rosemary Jonas received a painful memory in the first two days of his training. never felt that kind of pain before. Before he was selected to be the receiver he was allowed to take medication do that the pain would go away, but know that he is the receiver is not allowed to take any medication due to pain in his training.
In the book the Giver transmits the memories of loneliness, starvation, and poverty to Rosemary and those memories only gave her emotional pain not physical pain where Jonas had received physical pain very early on in his training.
The bad memory that Rosemary had received did not give her physical pain but made her apply for release. The reason why Rosemary had applied for release is because she had only gotten happy memories until till that point. One thing the Giver changed so that Jonas did not fail as the receiver was to give him physical pain. In the book The Giver Jonas had received the memory of a sun burn. This was the first time he had received a memory that involved physical
pain.
In the book the Giver had a very close bond with his receiver in training Rosemary. So when he gave her memories of loneliness, poverty, and starvation it hurt him to see her so sad, and even more when she applied for release. The giver knew he could not get connected with Jonas as he did with Rosemary so he tried staying distant. He did this by not telling him so much about his life but enough so him and Jonas would not form a bond. He also stayed distant by not asking a lot of questions about Jonas's background.
Did the Giver change his methods enough to train the new receiver of memory successfully? After the release of Rosemary the giver knew he had to change his methods of training the new receiver (Jonas) by giving him pain early on, giving hime physical pain and not just emotional pain , and he tried to stay distant.
