First, when Jonas and Gabe, while they were on their journey, did hear music, they couldn’t have imagined hearing music. When Jonas was with The Giver on page 115 the book said this “For the first time he heard something he knew as music.” This states that Jonas was near Elsewhere because when the giver is talking to Jonas The Giver says “Because I've been a little selfish. I haven't given any of it to you. I wanted to keep it for myself to the last…I began to hear something truly remarkable, and it is called music.” this means Jonas wasn’t given any music before he set off on his journey. When they are going up the mountain to get to Elsewhere the narrator says this, “It became a struggle to ride the bicycle as Jonas weakened from lack of food.” (174) What this tells us is that Jonas and Gabe didn't have enough food and water with them on their journey. When they are about halfway up the mountain the book tells us this, “A steep hill loomed ahead. In the best of conditions, the hill would have been a difficult, demanding ride.” (176) This means that they were struggling to get up the mountain because there was a lot of snow and they were trying to get up it on a bike.
