Brief Summary: The Giver
The Giver put his hands in Jonas’ back to transmit the memory. He was in what seemed to be like a sail boat, but it was longer and the color gray. He could also see the boat contained big brown boxes and what looked like huge round weapons. As for the day It was beautiful, the sun was very bright, the sky was blue and no clouds in the sky, and a salty smell. In contrast to all the good things he could see people running to the back of the boat, he didn’t understand why until he realized the boat was sinking. So he did as the others and went to the back of the boat and braced himself in case anything happened. Even after everyone went to the back of the boat it was no use, he could see the peek of the boat getting filled with water. Before he knew it he was in the water swimming, he had fallen out of the boat. All he could see was three other men that were swimming like him and a lot of floating boxes that had fallen. One of the men that fell out was on top of another person, making it harder for the one below to swim. Jonas kept looking and saw floatable boxes nearby ,he …show more content…

As fast a he could Jonas took the paddle and with a big splash threw it inside the ocean and started to push the water away with all his strength. The problem was that the wind was pushing him back not letting him paddle forward, he felt he was staying in the same place. He could hear the men screaming for him to keep paddling and to paddle harder. Until little by little they couldn’t keep swimming anymore went under water and the three men drowned. He couldn’t believe it he was shocked, one of them was so close he thought. He felt guilt and grief. Now Jonas knew that he would have to wait so that someone would come and find those who

Just imagine a world where everything was the same all the time. Every day, the weather as plain and ordinary as the clothes you wear. This is the world perceived in The Giver. The Giver is a story of a boy named Jonas living in a dystopian society where everything is the same; the people, the homes, the weather. Though they have eliminated all fear, pain, war, and hatred, they have also eliminated choice. But when Jonas is chosen as Receiver, he must fight to bring choice, passion, joy, and love back to the hearts of his community. This type of society differs from modern society. The page following the book’s title depicts a scene at sea. The whole image is washed with a dark blue from the sky to the ocean, and the crashing waves convey a menacing journey has taken place. At the bottom of the page, if one looks closely, it is evident that the bottom of the wooden raft has been drawn but blends into the rest of the image. This inclusion of the raft changes the perspective of the image as the responder is now been positioned as if they were looking out from the raft, the place of the Man. An immediate bond has now been formed between the responder and the man, and for the rest of the text we continue to sympathise with him.…

Cold. So cold. And then: quiet. A hollow, rushing kind of quiet. Darkness. A hero is a person or who, in the opinions of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is as a model or ideal. In Lois Lowry the book “The Giver”, Jonas goes on an archetypal hero’s journey through both positive and negative experience during his departure, initiation and return in this story I would consider Jonas as a hero because he took on many challenges such as being the receiver of memories. This is a huge job and he took the responsibilities. He rescued Gabe and went through many obstacles to reach his destination in the end. He underwent the harsh training of the job Receiver and survived.…

In the world of the giver memories were a thing of the distant past, lost to the effect of sameness, sameness was a choice that the people decided to enact making all equal to avoid potential conflict, but in the process the denizens of these communities were stripped of one of the most important human abilities, the ability to feel deep emotions. Along with these emotions, memories were seen as dangerous to the community’s way of life, so they created the position of receiver of memories to hold all the memories that the communities could not stand to have. Jonas just happened to be an eligible candidate, and under the apprenticeship of the previous receiver of memory who was to be referred by as the giver. Under the givers guidance Jonas…

“Socrates said the perfect society would be based on a great lie. People would be told that lie from the cradle, and they would believe it, because human beings need to make order out of chaos(-Anne Frasier)”. The Giver perfectly reflects the quote because their lives are based on a huge lie from birth to their death, but the Giver and receiver are exposed to the dark truth. Human beings are incapable of creating a perfect society due to their nature and limitations. This claim can be supported by the fact that perfection is highly relative and humans are imperfect by nature, furthermore, we don’t have control over everything. Rosemary's failure(p.76), the pilot’s close flyby to the ground, Jonas running away and the plan to release Gabriel are all examples of failure even…

Phillip Noyce's 2014 social science fiction film, 'The Giver', explores the contrasting societal structures of utopia and dystopia. The story, based on the 1993 novel of the same name, centres around Jonas, a young man, who lives in a 'seemingly idyllic' community free from suffering and difference. When Jonas is assigned the position of 'Receiver of Memory' he begins to discover the true pain and pleasure of life that he has been sheltered from. To show the differences between utopian and dystopian societies, Noyce has used various film techniques including setting, colour, costuming and camera angles and shots.…
