An authority figure can have the ability of making life changing decisions in the place of individuals, therefore employing a considerable amount of influence on individual’s choices and views. The political satire “Animal Farm” by George Orwell illustrates the abuse of power by the authority and limitation in the amount of understanding individuals can gain in order to successfully be influenced to conform to tyrannous ideologies. It is
clear that, the powerful manipulation of language and application of propaganda enables the totalitarian authority to exploit their position of power. When the pigs confiscate supplies from the individuals, they justify it by setting themselves up as disadvantaged and all the actions they took was for “your welfare”. Additionally, the windmill is symbolic of all the exploitation the individuals have suffered for the authority’s own gain. The totalitarian authority psychologically manipulates the individuals in order to construct the windmill which ultimately benefits them alone. The author’s parallels to figures and events in history has highlighted the similarity of the treatment of individuals during the Russian Revolution. The massacre in Animal Farm represents the oppressive political tactics of the Great Purge which occurred during the 1930s.
