The Corruption Of Power In George Orwell's Animal Farm

“As Stalin once said ‘a single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic’.” In George Orwell's Animal Farm, Napoleon is directly described because Stalin and Napoleon were both extremely paranoid and killed their own people to stay in power. Animal Farm is an allegorical story that symbolizes the Russian Revolution meaning that all the characters and battles represent the real people and events that lived and occurred during this time. Since Animal Farm is an allegory, there is extreme personification going on because the animals talk and plan like people do. With that said the plot of Animal Farm revolves around all of the hardships that Napoleon caused throughout his leadership. Therefore, George Orwell forecasted that power can be a corruptive force through Napoleon's manipulative
For example Napoleon says that he and the pigs need milk and apples for themselves because they contain nutrients that pigs need. Napoleon sent Squealer to clear up the milk and apples situation. Squealer states to the animals that “Our sole object in taking these milk and apples is to preserve our own health” (Orwell, 35). In saying this, Squealer tells the animals that the pigs only care about themselves and not the rest of the animals. A few years have passed now and Napoleon and the pigs are still proving to be selfish by selling Boxer to the knacker in order to buy themselves whiskey. When the van is driving away Benjamin reads the van and it reads “ Alfred Simmonds, Horse Slaughterer and Glue Boiler” (Orwell, 122). After a couple days go by “ A grocer's van pulls up and delivers a large wooden case of whiskey” (Orwell,126). The pigs and Napoleon had whiskey delivered to the house for themselves and the money came from selling Boxer proving them to be as selfish as before. Napoleon proves to be a very selfish leader by taking the milk and apples for himself but also selling Boxer for his own
