First I would explain to the intern that there is a special guide filled with ethical guidelines and is used specifically for ethical issues. The ACA formed A Practitioner's Guide to Ethical Decision Making in 1996 (ACA Code of Ethics , 2014). This guide suggests that there are seven steps for making ethically-based decisions, the basic elements of each step should be well-known. One reason is their beliefs and attitudes may cause them to form preconceived notions about an individuals that are incorrect, which can end up being very serious. Another reason counselors should evaluate his/her own beliefs and attitudes about addictions prior to working with clients because they need to be careful not offend their clients. To add, counselors should also be aware of religious beliefs and behaviors, languages and terminology used within cultures, and attitudes toward deviance, because again some of those things can offend clients (Myers & Salt, 2013).
