Utilizing the exact words of another author is known as quotations. Taking an author’s exact words and placing them into the body of another essay requires the authors name being used in the body of the sentence assigning the statement to that author or placing at the end in parentheses. As stated by Thompson in the introduction lesson, the authors name, title of the book, publisher, copyright year and publication city must all appear in the reference list at the bottom of the essay (2017). The intext citation would only require the authors name and date of publication enclosed in parentheses at the end of the paraphrased sentence.
Lastly, to utilize an author’s main idea, the essay writer will give a wide view of the main idea in a significantly shorter passage. The intext citation will be the same as paraphrasing as already explained. Again, the source must be listed properly in the reference list at the end of the essay. Failure to follow any of the above could be considered academic misconduct, cheating or plagiarism. Any of which could result in academic and/or disciplinary actions. Academic can include a written warning, grade adjustment, discretionary assignment or even course failure.
