With the advancement of the internet and technology, there has been an increase in the knowledge required to be hired. This is due to complicated software and business systems. For example, accounting jobs around the world use Excel to present data. If someone applies for an accounting job and they do not know excel, they are already well behind the competition.
Accountability is one of the most important
things that one can have in the workplace and with the technology we have today employees are much more accountable. The internet has forced employees to be accountable for their work because employers can install cameras that can stream lie feeds right to their favorite devices. Years ago, employees were able to get away with a lot more but the use of cameras has dramatically decreased the ability for a worker to commit any wrongdoing.
There was a time when a worker could be rude to a customer because it didn’t matter. No one could see the conversation they had, and the only people that might find out about a rude employee was someone close to the customer. With the help of websites like Yelp, Facebook, Twitter, and Google, customers can write reviews based on their experience at a certain establishment for the world to see. With rating systems in place, new customers can make decisions easier by simply looking at how many stars a business gets on average. For example, if a customer is looking at purchasing a used vehicle, they can get online and decide what dealerships to go to and which ones to avoid. A dealership that might have an average of 2 stars will most likely be lower on the list for the customer to visit compared to a place with 4.5 stars on average.
All of these skills are important in today's workforce simply because of technology. Technology has created a new generation of employees and if workers want to do things the old-fashioned way, they will quickly be replaced by someone that is up to date on the newest software, customer service techniques, and workplace etiquette.
