Objective:
To synthesize Acetanilide by recrystallization. To check its purity by calculating its percent yield. Introduction: Aniline is a primary aromatic amine and weak base which forms salts with mineral acids. In acidic solution, nitrous acid converts aniline into a diazonium salt that is an intermediate in the preparation of a great number of dyes and other organic compounds of commercial interest. When aniline is heated with organic acids, it gives amides, called anilides, such as acetanilide from aniline and acetic anhydride. Acetic anhydride is a so called intermediate chemical within organic synthesis, which means a substance intended to create another substance. Acetic anhydride is produced by dehydration of acetic and is used primarily for acetylating of amines, alcohols and thiols within both research and industry. Acetynalide is a product of aniline and acetic anhydride reaction. In the result of this to substances we get acetynalide which is odourless solid chemical which is soluble in hot water, alcohol, ether and etc. Acetynalide widely used for medical purposes and its trade name is Antifebrin.
Method: Method performed as in the lab manual page 43. No changes in methodology.
Materials:
* (20 drops) acetic anhydride * (0.20 g) aniline * Distilled water (5ml) * Filter paper * Water bath * Büchner funnel
Results: Initial mass | 52.025g | Final mass | 50.871g | Acetanilide mass | 1.154g |
g = 0.2135 / 93.12 mole = 0.00229 moles
0.00229 moles of Acetanilide = 0.00229 * 135.16 = 0.3098
% = (1.154g / 0.3098) * 100 = 372.49
Discussion:
Acetanilide is used as a precursor in penicillin synthesisand other pharmaceuticals including painkillers and intermediates. In medicine, it is a prodrug with analgesic and antipyretic, or fever-reducingproperties which is in the same class of drugs as
