Lies are told every day by you, me, and even your close loved ones. Everyone lies at some point in their lives. The simple true is we all lie. While reading the “Ways We Lie” by Ericsson’s it was very clear that lies are being told more than the truth. She explains many different types of lies being told from the smallest of lies to protect the emotional state of others, to the extreme lies being told and merely ignoring the plain facts of lies that cause real pain.…

In Tschetschot v. Commissioner, 93 TCM 914 (2007), the tax court ruled that taxpayer’s losses from participating in tournament poker were limited to the amount of her winnings. The court held that tournament poker is, despite its differences from other types of poker, essentially a wagering activity and therefore should not be treated differently from other forms of gambling for tax purposes. The court also rejected the taxpayer’s equal protection argument to treat tournament poker as sports, on the basis of the policy decisions of the congress to treat business based on wagering activities differently.…

After reading Stephanie Ericsson’s article titled “ The ways we lie” , I chose to write about delusion. In Ericsson’s article she said that delusion is closely related to other forms of lying such as dismissal , omission , and amnesia. It is a form of protecting yourself from facts that you don’t want to face. Instead of taking a good look at yourself and being totally honest with yourself , you allow logic to go out the window and make up excuses for your actions. You may truly believe what you are telling yourself . That makes delusion a cunning way to excuse your behavior and your actions. On a grander scale, some people may delude unpleasant or overwhelming facts ( such as “The Revelation” (or second coming) because to truly adknowledge…
Jackpot, lucky seven and snake eyes, these are just a few words that fill the air in a casino. A casino is the place to gamble money in order to make quick change. Just like the 1960s, people gambled their time and lives away in order to change the world. While there are many who gambled for racial equality, two were extremely good at it. Their names were Malcom X, and Martin Luther King Jr. Though there methods were different, they both made change. Although the change made isn’t money, but a change in the people in order for them to strive for racial equality. Evidently, when Malcom begins to guide the people, he becomes a card dealer instead of the gambler, making the people gamble at his ideas. Therefore when Malcom X gives his speech, like a dealer in a casino, he…
In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson, she talks about the many different types of lies. She says that we all lie, and we all lie in most of the ways she mentions. In my opinion, I agree with most of what she says. It is true that we all lie in some way, but we might not all lie in the same way. Some people like to use the “lie of omission” while others might to tend towards the “white lie.” While these lies, in my opinion, tend to be the most common, some of her other example of lying are also used widely. “Ignoring the plain facts” is used all over the news and media, and her example of the Church in the 1960s is one of the most famous. This is also an example of irony, because the Church itself was the one “ignoring the plain…
“YOU WILL DO AS I SAY!” He yells at her then he says in a low, deep angry voice. “You will marry him or else you will marry no one.” “Understand me?” “Do I make myself clear!?!!”…
The bells and whistles are going off on nearby machines; the crowds grow increasingly big at different tables as the more a person wins. Yet those who come for just something to do keep sat at their machines playing their slots. Looking around the people didn’t seem any different the African American’s seemed to stay localized to the slots area whereas the Caucasian’s seemed to play at the tables more.…
In Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” it is evident that conforming to society and sticking with tradition can lead to outweighing personal morals./be a burden on the lives of people. Although The Lottery was a tradition that has been occurring for years, nobody sticks up to support their morals to challenge The Lottery. Not only does The Lottery limit the rights of many, but many other expectations in their society do too.…
“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is nothing less than a powerful story about a society that gathers once per year and holds a lottery. But this is not a lottery with a winner; it is a lottery with a loser. “The Lottery” is a chilling story because it depicts a sense of normalcy among the towns’ people when they randomly decided to kill a neighbor by practically just drawing straws. This story really asks the question, are rituals always a good thing? If rituals are a good or bad thing do we even know why we do it half the time? “The Lottery”, shows us that even though tradition may have been happening for years doesn’t mean that the traditions we choose to follow are beneficial.…
Have you ever lied to protect someone you were close to? Sometimes lying is okay even though some people think it’s so horrible. Lying is sometimes allowable!…
Lying is “a false statement or action made with the intent to deceive.” (Ericsson1) Lying is a bad thing for anyone to do for various reasons. Three writers that agree are Stephanie Ericsson author of “The ways we Lie”, Richard Gunderman author of “is lying bad for us?”, and Angela Haupts author of “How lying affects your health”. These three writers give great insight on how these lies can affect ones mental health, as well as their psychological health and also how you can improve from those negative symptoms from lying.…
