Active Listening Case Study
Jackie Abraham has been preparing for an important presentation to a new client that if done well, it could start an excellent relationship. She has done a lot of research on the project along with Ed Rollins. The morning of the presentation, Jackie’s son becomes ill and she won’t be able to make the presentation. She gives Ed a call and tells him that he will need to make the presentation without her. While Jackie is explaining where the latest version of the presentation is, Ed starts thinking about what attire he should wear and how he might open the presentation. She tells Ed to ensure he checks the date to make sure he has the latest version of the presentation which would allow time for the new client to ask questions. Ed assures her that he will be OK.

When Ed arrives at the client’s office, he realizes he doesn’t have the latest version of the presentation. Ed doesn’t panic’ he just uses less of the presentation and adds information on his own. This took more time than allotted and only allowed the client to ask one question. When Ed gives Jackie an update on how the meeting went, she is upset.

Responses:
• What recommendations would you make to Ed to improve his listening skills?

o There are four requirements for active listening. They are intensity, empathy, acceptance, and a willingness to take responsibility for completeness. It is obvious that Ed did not give his full attention to Jackie when she was explaining what he needed to do to pull off the presentation. My recommendations would be:
 Keep focused on what Jackie is telling him
 Repeat back what he needs to do
 Ask questions
 Have Jackie repeat what she needs

• What role does the speaker play in good listening skills?

o How the speaker communicates plays a large role in listening. They are the one that needs the information understood. The speaker needs to make sure the other party is listening and ask questions to ensure they understand. Demeanor, body

    I honestly cannot choose good listeners over poor listeners, it has been my experience that listeners are split 50/50. Many people can portray good listening by making eye contact, nodding, saying things like “right”, “uh huh”, or “exactly” but when you ask them to repeat what you said they can barely give you the cliff notes. On the other hand there are plenty of people who offer similar verbal and nonverbal indicators of being involved in your speech but who are truly listening for understanding. In my past experience working in management and much earlier in entry-level positions, I’ve come to understand the importance of effective communication and with that, listening. A few helpful listening skills that employees can practice are: responding to the communication evenly regardless of if they agree or disagree with the stance of the speaker. Do not interrupt, let the speaker say what they need then provide your response likewise, while the other person is speaking it is always good to acknowledge what is being said through verbal and nonverbal cues. Our text states “Listening represents a critical part of management communications… Active listening involves hearing with a purpose and making a conscious effort to turn off internal filters and biases…Empathic listening takes place when the receiver tries to understand the other person… Critical listening occurs when the recipient goes beyond comprehending the message to evaluating it” (Baack, 2012). I can improve my listening skills by employing the techniques offered by Baack (2012) and by recognizing through my own communication what works and what has not.…

    EDPS has shaped me into being a compassionate, thoughtful, and honest active listener to my friends, family, and coworkers. I thought that I knew what it meant to be an active listener but until I learned to skills and practiced it, I learned how much room I had for improvement. The book that taught me the most about active listening throughout this course is, “The Lost Art of Listening,” by Michael Nichols. What I took away, and use most from the entire book is that the heart of listening is the suspend your own needs (Nichols 2009). Genuine listening demands taking an interest in the speaker and what he or she has to say and not thinking about what your next comeback is going to be (Nichols 2009). Doing so really opens your ears and mind up to fully listen to what the underlying message that the speaker is trying to get across because most of the time there is a deeper meaning to what they are saying. I also realized that even when you do have the opportunity to talk, still holding back your feeling to dive deeper into the other person thought process can be more beneficial to the conversation to make it more effective because you are showing to that person that you value what they are saying and want to learn more. That then in turn can lead to them valuing your opinion and create a safe environment to not hold back your thoughts and feelings. I have practiced this skill…
