A Case Study in Non-Verbal Communication

The Meeting:

Vanessa has worked as a market analyst for Widgets Inc. for six months; this morning she’s scheduled to present a proposal for a new marketing strategy to her supervisor, Rod Zoeller. Although the work atmosphere at Widgets Ins. is fairly informal, today Vanessa has replaced her usual office attire of slacks, casual jacket and penny loafers with a navy pinstripe suit, crisp white blouse, and moderately high-heeled shoes.

As Vanessa waits out Mr. Zoeller’s office ,she clutches her briefcase in her lap ,her hands gripping the handle tightly. She takes several deep breaths as she mentally rehearses the points she plans to make in her meeting .Rod opens his office door and sticks his head out . “Vanessa, you can come in now.” Vanessa stands quickly, nearly dropping her briefcase, and teeters for just a second as she adjusts her balance .She swallows, takes a deep breath, and walks purposefully to Rod’s Office. Rod extends his hand and say’s, Hope you haven’t been waiting too long out there .I had a couple of fires to put out, but I think things are okay now.” Vanessa grips his hand loosely in hers, conscious that her palms are perspiring.

Rod says, “Have a seat, Vanessa.” Vanessa sits and places her briefcase on the floor beside the chair. Rod remains standing only a foot away from Vanessa, directly in front of her. He crosses his arms. Vanessa shifts in the chair ,crosses her legs ,uncrosses them ,tugs at the collar of her blouse to pull it away from neck ,looks up at the Rod, then looks down at the edge of the desk.

“ You said you had an idea you wanted to run by me ? Rod inclines his head forward slightly.

“I think I’ve come up with a new strategy that will really boost Widget Sales,Mr .Zoeller.” She looks him in the eye now. “ That’s what I want to talk to you about .” Vanessa picks up the briefcase ,places it flat on the desk in front of her and snaps open the latch .She pulls out a folder

Later, just a couple of minutes before Prep, I sat by the phone rooms, nauseous about how I would break the world-shattering news to Sophie. Ah, my beloved Sophie, we dated last year until she saw Matt Shauman. But I would have won her back with these tickets. Maybe I can say that I was suspended and Max will get them for her, so as not to break her fragile heart. So, plucking up my last piece of courage, I entered a phone cubicle and dialled her boarding house’s number. Brrrr, Brrrr, with numb fingers, they shook like an earthquake, so wedging the phone between my shoulder and ear, my breathing…

Tom wondered for what seemed to be the millionth time why Dectives were required to dress like wall-street bankers or stock analysts. At least that was the expectation in public, however the moment he had the office to himself, he unknotted his tie, slipped off the linen suit jacket, and undid the top button of his shirt, then sat back in his chair, raised his eyes to the ceiling, and tapped the tip of a ballpoint pen against his teeth. That was Tom's usual mode of concentration and contemplation, and so intent was the man's focus on the new case that all else slipped from his mind, even the recollection that he'd texted his wife. Therefore, the sudden familiar sound of her voice, accompanied by the enticing aroma of barbecue, startled him, and he immediately shot upright. The sight of Lila elicited a smile that only widened with the greeting and kiss. "Sorry baby."…

Ruth rose from porch swing and walked back into house. “Hello?” Ruth answered the phone. “Mrs. Semmes?” Voice said on other line. “Yes, this is Mrs. Semmes, can I help you?” Ruth wondered as she spoke. “This is Peter Arnold of Arnold, Terres and Keatan. I need you and your son to come into my office next week,” Attorney said. “What on earth for Mr. Arnold? Is anything wrong?” Ruth said as she started to get nervous. “Well, it seems I have a will delivered to my office from your late husband, Donald Carter Semmes. Vanessa really left me. Now I spend many evening hours looking at her tapestry. It is not the only thing she left with me, but it is one of few that keep a part of her. The thing is not only green and orange anymore; blood platter created a fanciful abstraction on its surface. Stains turned brown already, and this color reminds me about Vanessa’s hazel eyes. It was an accident; I have never hit her before. But she was so mean and awful that day; I did not understand how it happened. Vanessa laid on the floor when I was in countenance again; she did not…

Rather than providing comfort as a home should, the house isolates Vanessa, who must always be wary whenever entering its threshold. Due to Grandmother Macleod’s pretentious and vigilant watch over her house to maintain its order, Vanessa is forbidden entry into many rooms. Vanessa, confounded by this concept, yearns to bring change to the Macleod house so that it may transform into a more warm and welcoming home better suited for her youthful nature. However, her grandmother’s adamant insistence to main tradition and order, prompts Vanessa’s strong sense of isolation and confusion in the…
