to consider: First, assemble an emergency supply kit for your car, home and workplace. Carrying such things as: Hand gun, Pepper Spray, Taser, knife, blankets, first aid kit, water, candy or MRE’s, emergency cellphone, teddy bear or small stuffed animals (good for children) are helpful. Then you need to be aware of your surroundings, and any possible dangers. Take note of the two nearest exits wherever you are at. Knowing the evacuation plan for your workplace is a good idea. Always consider leaving an area if you feel uncomfortable or if something does not seem right. After that, develop a family communication plan and ensure all family members know how to use it. How you respond to an active shooter will be determined by the circumstances of the encounter, remain calm and quickly determine the best way to protect your own life, and use these guidelines to help you survive.
If an escape route is available; evacuate immediately. You should leave your belongings behind, then get everyone down and out of site; make sure no one is visible from outside the room. Don’t respond to unfamiliar voices unless you are certain of who it is. It may be shooter trying to lure you out of hiding. Meanwhile, help others if possible; however, if you hear gunfire, stay calm and take cover. Call 911, give any information possible. And follow all instructions given by law enforcement.
Finally, find a good place to hide. Hiding spot should be where you are less likely to be found by the shooter, provide you protection and not restriction any options you may have.
After that, if possible, lock any and all doors or block the doors with heavy furniture, you can also wedge the door shut with door stops or shoes. Meanwhile, turn off any lights, TVs, radios that might give you away. Next spread out, (don’t huddle) this gives you options for escape and makes you a harder target to hit. Remain quiet, silence cell phones or anything that would give you away. If it is safe, call 911 stay on the line until the 911 operator ends the call.
Finally, as a last resort and only when your life in imminent danger attempt to disrupt or incapacitate the shooter. Personnel should use whatever means possible to overpower the subject to save further lives. Then use minimum force necessary to subdue the shooter, however deadly force is authorized. When you believe you are in immediate danger of death or serious harm.
Taking out the shooter is a last resort, make a plan, act as a team, commit to your plan completely, do whatever necessary to neutralize the situation. Meanwhile, you should be prepared to give the following information to responding officers, the number of shooters if more than one. Next, the location of shooter(s) and their physical description, the time you observed the shooter. Later, give the number of weapons and type of weapons in the shooters possession and number of potential victims at the location.
In the beginning, Law Enforcements main purpose is to stop the active shooter as soon as possible.
Always try to remain calm and follow instructions. Place any items in your hands on the ground and immediately raise your hands and spread your fingers. Be sure to keep your hands visible at all times. Next, move quickly to the assembly point. And expect to stay there until the situation is over. Later, you will be interviewed by the police, and do not leave the assembly area until instructed to do so. Remember to stay away from the incident area, and use phone services sparingly, so they remain open for Emergency Responders. Lastly, notify family and friends of your condition. Later the first law enforcement officers to arrive on the scene will not stop to help injured personnel. Expect rescue teams comprised of additional officers and rescue personnel to follow the initial officers. They may also call on able bodied people to help remove the wounded
DON’T PLAY WHACK-A-MOLE!
Have you ever played Whack-a-mole? Often people will move to where they think they are safe and then try to see what is happening with the shooting. These people are the moles about to be whacked. Keep gaining distance and keep behind cover.
