If gun control is enforced, there will be less times when guns are used in the wrong way. It’s easy to think that a criminal background check is all that is needed when selling guns, but some shooters legally bought the guns and their criminal history starts after their purchase. For example, James Holmes was what the NRA would consider as a responsible gun owner. He had no bad history with guns, that is, until July 20, 2012. That’s when Holmes walked into a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado and killed 12 innocent people, and injured 70 more. Holmes later on admitted to his psychiatrist that he hoped that he would be able to murder all 400 people in the theater. This is significant because someone can have a clean background and legally own a gun, but still cause terror with their weapon. Another example is the recent San Bernardino shooting that happened in December 2015. Tashfeen Malik and Syed Rizwan Farook shot a total of 35 people in a killer rampage at the Inland Regional Center. They killed 14 people and injured 21. Later on, it was discovered that one of the shooters legally purchased the guns used in the shooting. This is important because having a legal gun can be used for evil, and a clear background check does not mean that the gun will not be used for harm. In another case, Adam Lanza, the shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary, took the gun he used from his mother, who legally purchased them. He shot a …show more content…
to follow. For example, Australia’s strictest gun laws were in effect beginning in 1996, and since then, homicide rates have dropped. This is significant because if gun laws are heavily enforced, less homicides will take place. Another example is Japan, whose gun-homicide rates are some of the lowest in the world. The latest data available says that the gun homicide rates are one in ten million. Also in Japan, citizens must pass a series of written, mental, and drug tests, and a background check. They must also inform the government on how their weapon and ammunition is being stored and have their firearm inspected annually. It is important to notice how strict Japan’s gun laws are because there are few emergencies that involve guns. Some notable gun laws come from the United Kingdom. Some may doubt the effectiveness of their gun laws, but when they enforced their gun laws in the 1990’s, when gun crimes were very frequent, they stilled occurred. But then, in 2004, when harsher laws were enforced, the amount of gun crimes peaked, and then each following year, there were less and less gun crimes in the UK. This is significant because it shows that when gun laws are more heavily enforced, the amount of crime dies
