admire
There are many people that I admire, but none more than my father. Despite the many hardships he survived, my father remains a positive influence in my life. During his childhood, my father overcame many obstacles. He has always been supportive of me, and taught me the importance of strong family values and success.
We all have obstacles when we are growing up, but my father had more than most people. He had an abusive father, and because of that, had to drop out of high school. As far back as he can remember, his father was an abusive alcoholic. Many nights, instead of playing football or studying, my father would sit by his fathers side talking to him until he was sober. During the more violent episodes, my father would purposely put himself in harms way to keep his father from abusing one of his seven brothers or sisters.

Because of his childhood, my father was forced to drop out of high school and help support the family. It proved very difficult to make decent money without a diploma. He struggled through many odd jobs, but still managed to become the plant manager of a large automotive corporation.
It is because of his difficulties in childhood that my father learned the importance of being supportive and understanding. As my father always said, "You have to make mistakes in life to learn from them." And he let me make those mistakes. Then he would talk to me about the decisions I made and why things went wrong. He helped me sort out many difficult situations throughout my teen years. He did this with love and understanding, never with criticism or meanness. Without the help he provided me with during those difficult years, I would not be the

Growing up with an alcoholic can drastically affect a child’s life. One in five Americans has lived with an alcoholic relative while growing up (“Children of Alcoholics”). I am one of those five. Yes, my father was an alcoholic while I was growing up. It is a touchy subject for me, but it is safe to say growing up with an alcoholic dad was very difficult for my family. After an emotional separation, my father realized what his life had become, and he worked to overcome his alcoholism. Many of these efforts to recover died out quickly, and my dad had to jump from organization to organization until he finally recovered through Help Incorporation. Whenever I ask my dad about why it was so…

Growing up, I always wanted to help my father. I wanted to get tools for him and rattle off facts, even when we both knew they were wrong. My drive to help people never lessened as I grew up, though it did evolve. My dad would watch me be on the phone for hours on end, listening to people’s problems, rarely speaking myself. Dad would always say, “You’re wise beyond your years, Loobie,” and I would chuckle, believing him wholeheartedly. Being the daughter of an alcoholic, I had my own troubles, but I ignored them for I was under the impression that I was wise and wise meant you could handle anything thrown at you. I felt as if I was fine and just wanted to listen to other people’s troubles, distracting me from my own and always more manageable. My father let me be, because I was happy doing what I loved: helping people.…

There have been many times in my life where I had to overcome adversity, but my best example was way back in elementary school from the grades kindergarten through 5th grade. I used to not care about my academic standpoint or ego on how people looked at me. I had the potential to be a very smart and excellent student and excelled in school but I didn’t take advantage and did everything possible to not do the work. In many circumstances, I would have lied or cheated so I wouldn’t have to do the work. My grades that I was getting was not a reflection of my smartness but a reflection of my arrogance and laziness. My parents would yell at me all the time and have long talks with me because they knew I was better than this and tried every possible…

My father is a recovering alcoholic. At home, I did the typical things that all little girls do; played with dolls, stuffed animals, colored pictures, and participated in various sports. As a young child I grew up adapting to everything he did, thinking it was normal. At that time, I did not know his behavior was different from other adults. As I grew older I started to understand my father faced challenges that I needed to accept and adjust to. Although difficult, being exposed to his behaviors at such a young age has helped me recognize the connection of how negative actions can adversely affect a person.…

Secondly, another reason why I admire my dad is his ability to admit his wrongs very easily and try to get others to balance him out. If my dad is unable to do something, he will let you know then and there, giving you enough time to make arrangements. People always say that it takes a man to admit wrong and since my dad is very good at doing this, I admire and respect him tremendously. Also, since he is very adamant on staying true to these values, he has always tried and instill these values into me, and for that reason I am thankful and appreciative as not everyone gets guidance like this.…
