Adopt a Pet
Persuasive Speech Self-Evaluation My topic for my Persuasive Speech was on, “Why should you adopt a pet?” In class, when we were in groups looking over our classmates outlines, my topic was on seatbelt safety law. I thought that topic wasn’t strong enough to have an argument with. Somehow, in my group we were talking about pets that we have adopted. Then, I thought why not a speech on why you should adopt a pet. I myself have adopted a dog and volunteered at the SPCA about a year ago so I thought it would be perfect. Also, I thought it would be a good idea to inform the class about the pets that are sold in the pet stores and where they come from. When I was first jotting down ideas and facts to back up my speech, everything was coming from my mind. I did a freestyle speech on why should you adopt a pet. I didn’t have an outline or anything; I spoke in front of a couple of my friends too. Then when I did do the outline, and had more details to back up what I had to say, I noticed it was different to me. The reason I say this is because when I spoke “freestyle” I noticed everything went smooth and I had no trouble. Then, when I followed my outline, I had to remember what I say. I feel like my vocal and physical delivery was so much better than from my last speech. Preparation was the key to this too and I prepared the whole week for this. I practiced over and over again in front of a couple people so that helped me. I believe I was loud and clear enough that the class could hear me.
From my previous speech, I was told to work on the tone of my voice and I think I did improve on that. Although I am not where I need to be with that, I want to learn how to vary my tone up and down. My facial expressions that I was showing were looks of concern and empathy for and toward the animals. The more you’re into the subject you are speaking about the more the people will want to hear what you have to say. Also, my eye contact with everyone was much better than

I went the first day, so I don’t have a recording to look at. Even though I cannot see my speech I still realized some of my strengths and weaknesses. Some of my weaknesses consisted of: bad transition words, sounding shaky within the introduction, and time. My strengths consisted of: good movement, good tone, good statistics, and good eye contact. To start off my introduction I was very nervous, and I don’t know for sure, but I think the audience could tell. My transition into my first main point was not the best, but once I was in my first main point I was able to settle and really stroll through the rest of my speech. Within my speech I was able to incorporate many statistics to make my point why horse slaughter is needed although I am still…

When I watched my presentation, I saw how I started with a strong introduction with a rhetorical question. I by saying “Who would you call? What would you do? How would you handle the situation? All these questions may be hard for you to answer in your crisis. I got the answer to clean up the mess you got yourself into.” Also, I give the audience a vision by saying “Let’s say your life is being broadcast all over the media or maybe even your company. We all know One of your biggest fears would be getting caught in a scandal or having a bad rep.” You got all part of my introduction to the greeting, thesis, credibility, and overview. I also, had the personality to my speech when talking you could see how enthusiastic I was to the audience. This made my speech be interesting and not dull and my voice a great projectile for everyone in the class to hear. In my speech, I had great eye contact so I had the attention, keen interest, and understanding for my classmates. None verbal communication is “Behaviors, symbols, attributes, or objects—whether intended or not—that communicate messages with social meaning.” In my body of my speech, I provided information in chronically order as my overview. I give great information about the education requirements, job outlook, and Pros and…

I used dread the discomfort that arose from public speaking and avoided every class presentation, which to my frustration, resulted in missing exciting opportunities. During my sophomore year of high school, I chose to take a speech class to embrace speaking opportunities instead of shying away from them. The first few days of class were nerve-racking, but steadily I gained more skill and confidence in my speaking abilities. Towards the close of sophomore year, I stepped into a leadership role, despite my previous anxieties. In a 100-student mock trial, I confidently presented the opening and closing statements for the defense.…

While keeping their interest with your words and delivery style, you are build a rapport with your audience. Treat a speech as a conversation, while making eye contact and using relaxed hand and body gestures. The delivery style is the vehicle that will deliver your message to its destination. Controlling the pitch and tone of your voice, using variable speeds and occasional pauses will attract the attention of the audience. Be genuine and honest. If a mistake is made while delivering your speech, acknowledge it, and move on calmly. The most important thing to know when speaking in public, is knowing when and how to stop. During this persuasive speech, I once again started out slow (meaning during the introduction), but it eventually progressed and was much more easier to understand compared to the Informal Speech I had previously given. As soon as I had gotten more comfortable, it started to flow much better. My transitions between paragraphs made it clearer for my audience to follow. My points used were difficult to come by, but the goal of the speech to persuade my audience was still there and was still effective. If the points were more clear, the speech would have been better than it allegedly turned out. I do not have much strengths during my speeches, but what I can do to get better is to think of what I am going to say during my speech with the help…

A big portion of my life I was a very secluded and quiet kid from middle school into freshman year of college. Being put in a class where all your assignments, quizzes, and tests were all based on your ability to speak to others sounded like a nightmare to me. Lesson after lesson I learned how to avoid plagiarism, the multiple parts of a speech, and even how to avoid speech anxiety. When it was my designated day to speak, even with all the information taught, it was the worst speech given that day due to how timid I was talking. As the days went hearing other people give their first speech helped me to understand something, that I was not alone. There were others in the class that were as bad or worse than I was at delivering speeches. After the initial speech my confidence for myself grew as I prepared for the speeches throughout the…

Watching ones self speak is never exactly fun. Once again, however, I was pleasantly surprised. This time I was even happier with how I had done then I was with my first speech. I could tell with the IDEA speech that I was more calm. I wasn’t making as many nervous movements, as I did with with Grab Bag speech. I feel like my delivery was much better. While I need to continue to learn to slow down and speak more like I would in real life, my delivery was much more clear. This has a lot to do with not being as nervous. I know that I have a tendency to speak quickly, and I need to work on not sounding like I am reading from my note cards. I do feel like having note cards with me, tends to make my speeches worse. I need to learn to not rely on them as much. This is something I will continue to work on. I still have a tendency to use verbal fillers, however, I noticed them much less in this speech then I did in my Grab Bag…

As a speaker, you need to harness the power of eye contact when delivering a speech, do as to establish a crucial bond with the audience and retain their interest in your speech. When giving a speech is important to scan the audience and not just look at one but several people, attempt to make eye contact with as many people as possible. Make eye contact as natural as possible. If someone in the audience is looking directly at you, they deserve the respect of eye contact for several seconds as you speak. Once they look away, it is time for you to move onto the next listener. My tribute speech and informative speech were similar with Angela’s comments about reading off note cards and I clearly see that in both speeches. I can see in both my speeches that I’m very nervous and need to just take deep breaths after each point. I’m rarely looking at my audience in both speeches. I have no hand gestures in either of my speeches which is something I need to work on. I needed to practice both speeches a lot more then I had done. My peer comments on having nice clear points are the same on both speeches. The peer comments also said I need to work on eye contact and gestures on both speeches.…

This was the easiest speech, considering that all I had to do was rant about the story I was telling. For this speech, I didn’t feel that nervous because it was something that I remember vividly and nothing could go wrong with it. Moving on to the next speech, which was the informative speech, I felt nervousness once again. The fact that we had to research everything well and make sure the sources were cited correctly, then try memorizing what we would say for 6 minutes, and aside from that remember to do the speaker’s triangle, I got anxious. Fortunately, I did not do horrible, which is what I was expecting. Continuing to the next speech, we had our persuasive speech. This speech at first seemed easy because it was similar to the informative speech in many ways. The only difference was the time limit and the PowerPoint we had to make. For this speech I was well prepared and I felt great about it, I thought it was going to be the best speech. I had high hopes, but not everything goes as planned because as soon as my speech started and I was about to change the slide, I was unable to use the clicker. I got embarrassed and did not want to continue, but I knew I had to. I pushed along through the speech until I finished it. Although it wasn’t the best speech, I had to learn that not everything will flow the way you want things to, and instead you need to move…
