Before the Industrial Revolution, many products were limited to certain areas and regions due to specialized industries. After the Industrial Revolution, consumer production boomed due to many new changes.
For example, English porcelain manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood first attempted to find customers among the royal family and aristocracy. He then produced a less expensive version of the chinaware for the middle-class customers. He also utilized advertising, revealed showrooms in London, and sent salespeople all over Britain with samples and catalogs of his wares. He thus acted as an influential entrepreneur and persuaded people to need and want his consumer goods. The eighteenth century witnessed a considerable growth of towns, even in France and Great Britain, probably somewhat less than 20 percent of the population lived in cities. The urban rich were often visibly divided from the urban poor and aristocrats and upper middle class lived in fashionable town houses while the poorest town dwellers usually gathered along the river banks. The middle class emerged as the most diverse and dynamic element of the urban population and made up the middle class.
