The Results: Reason/ Sub-Topic A Spradlin 3 Text messaging affects teen literacy by changing the way that teens read and write. For example, teenagers alter the English language by using shortcuts to communicate in code including word substitutions such as, “OMG” for “oh my God”, “ILY” for “I love you”, and “TTYL” for “talk to you later”; just to name a few. The topic of texting is worth talking about because it could change the way teens communicate worldwide. In addition, it can reshape the English language, as we know it today.
How this relates to the thesis is that it explains how teenagers use shortcuts when they text. Also, teenager’s skills in reading and writing will degrade over time if they chose texting over the proper English. So the question remains, does text messaging affect teen literacy? I think that literacy is affected by texting. Teachers and parents believe that texting is dumbing down literacy and are concerned that it is affecting student’s schoolwork (Alexander 2011). Many teachers in America believe that students are making countless mistakes in writing assignments because of the abbreviated language they are using in text messages and bringing into the classroom (Ross 2007). I learned that texting really does make a difference in how teenagers read and write the English language. In addition, I found that it is still important to maintain your English literacy skills. At first I found that gathering information for research purposes was a challenge. But, as I continued with the process of research it became easier to find information.

    Cullington points out some of the arguments that were made by those who believe that texting has detrimental affects on its writers.
