The award winning radio drama series Afghanada has run from 2006 to 2011. Afghanada is about of a troop of Canadian soldiers deployed to Afghanistan where they must ward off and defeat the Taliban using guns, weapons and violence in order to help the people of the country. They must listen to their leader and obey commands in order to win the fight, ensure the safety of the people and most importantly, to survive. The soldiers in the unit all have their own unique personality traits and characteristics. For example, Chucky is a wise-cracker compared to Dean who is harsh and serious. I guess I’m a reconstructionist at heart”. (Ep 6 17:05). Shack’s inexperience is also seen when we see is not comfortable with giving orders on the battlefield. He is unsure of what to do when he sees the woman in the burka coming up the hill (Ep 6 4:47). Kinsella intervenes to his uncertainty when she says “Sergeant, the lives of your men are at stake, if you don’t give the orders I will!” (Ep 6 4:56) and he finally gives the orders. His hesitancy hinders the group’s ability to protect themselves from possible threats. Additionally, his soft-heartedness causes him to feel guilty about the consequences of combat. Shack becomes upset that he did not know the woman was innocent even when Kinsella reassures him they followed normal protocol (Ep 6 6:40). Chucky notices the sergeant trembling with fear after the ordeal; even though the group must handle potential threats ready to attack throughout the series. Sergeant tries to redeem himself by aiding Balal and his plan to help ward off the ‘Taliban’; however the plan backfires while the sergeant’s emotions get the better of him to try to help people. This is seen when Chucky notices the sergeants face light up with “a look of pure determination” when Balal said he needs help to ward of ‘Taliban’. (Ep 6 12:34) Shack’s reconstructive and soft hearted tendencies make him unfit to be a leader compared to
