“Stereotyping”
Stereotyping in America has been a constant ongoing issue since the emergence of African Americans in this country. Stereotyping can be defined as a thought that can be adopted about specific types of individuals or certain ways of doing things. These thoughts or beliefs may or may not accurately reflect reality. The act of stereotyping amongst minorities has been heighten in the 1960’s the reemerged when the war on drugs presented by president Nixon was used to unfairly target minority groups when the emergence of crack cocaine began to flood the streets the United States using racial profiling . Racial profiling can be defined as targeting a particular group of people who you believe are more likely to commit crimes. Americans tend to look at African Americans in a different light the war on drugs allowed police to unfairly stop , and frisk/ search black men without probable cause. Relying on police to serve and protect communities has led to numerous neighborhoods to become targets. Racial profiling is patently illegal, violating the U.S. Constitution’s core promises of equal protection under the law to all and freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. Just as importantly, racial profiling is ineffective. It alienates communities from law enforcement, hinders community policing efforts, and causes law enforcement to lose credibility and trust among the people they are sworn to protect and serve. Statistics have shown that cops tend to target African Americans more that White Americans. A greater percentage of male drivers (12%) than female drivers (8%) were stopped by police during 2011.
