Racial Profiling
Although racial profiling is legal, it's is unacceptable and very common in society. Racial profiling is defined as, “discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual's race, ethnicity, religion or national origin.” Even though it is said that in America racism is not acceptable, it is practiced on today’s society making it seem acceptable to everyone. As said in the article “Jim Crow Policing” by Bob Herbert, “It is incredible how few of the stops yielded any law enforcement benefit. This is why profiling a person on his or her behavior is a positive form of expression because by doing this, the person is being judged by his or her personality. For instance, in Linda Chavez’s article, “Everything Isn’t Racial Profiling” she states, “But I’m not opposed to allowing-no, requiring-airlines to pay closer attention to passengers who fit a terrorist profile, which includes national origin. The problem is distinguishing between what is permissible, indeed prudent, behavior and what is merely bigotry” (Chavez). Chavez here states that security on airlines should be conscious of a person’s origin; however that should not be a reason to stop them. They should pay attention to their origin but also on the person’s behavior throughout the process and the looks of the person. This is reality, in society you are looked at the poor Mexican who comes from a drug dealing background or a black person who comes from the gangster background. It seems exaggerating, but this is life for many out there and believe it or not people go through this on an everyday basis. In resume, racial profiling is not acceptable in an way to anyone from both Hispanics or colored people due to taking only race into account while profiling is an acceptable expression because this is mainly on the person’s inner self. As shown on the articles and novels, in today’s time racial profiling is still practiced by people, however it is commonly covered up as profiling a person.
