The war in Vietnam was a conflict that started in the 1950s and ended in the early 1970s. During this time period, the United States became increasingly involved in Vietnamese political, economic and military affairs. There were a combination of reasons as to why the United States became more involved, the most important of which in my opinion were the Domino Theory and the growing influence of the National Liberation Front (NFL).…

Michael Gough, former chair of the Veterans Administration advisory group on health effects of herbicides, does not dispute the fact that millions of gallons of Agent Orange were sprayed to destroy crops, yet argues that American soldiers were not repeatedly exposed to it. Gough refers to scientific studies that lead to his verdict of a lack of evidence supporting the notion of Vietnam veterans exposed to dioxin. Gough points out that there is a distinction between perceptions of the public and science community regarding this matter. In his mind, the public opinion will emerge victorious over the scientific claims that prove otherwise. Gough bases the outcome of Vietnam veterans being compensated on political decisions rather than scientific…

Agent Orange is a chemical agent that was used in the Vietnam War between the years of 1962 and 1971. Without any knowledge of the damage that it can cause, it was spread across the southern part of Vietnam. Aerial Spray used by airplanes and helicopters was how the agent was spread throughout Vietnam. After the spread of the agent throughout the vegetation, there were some side effects that were unknown but later surfaced. This is how Agent Orange played a major role to the Vietnamese and also to the Soldiers. It caused a lot of side effects that not only affected the Vietnamese and their families but also the United States Soldiers that served during the war, and their families. It forced the United States to compensate those who were affected. They only compensated those who could prove they were exposed to the agent. Some of the Vietnamese and their families were compensated but Vietnam is still requesting more compensation from the United States.…

    My Lai Massacre

The US military methods failed, but still had an effect on the war. The main reason that they failed was because they couldn't find the enemies. The Viet Cong hid in under ground tunnels, in the jungle or in the villages with the normal innocent civilians, so the US couldn't differentiate between them. Napalm failed because it hardly killed any enemies, and burnt many innocent people alive, this made the Vietnamese civilians disapprove of the Americans. So they thought that they would use defoliants to destroy the jungle, they used a defoliant called 'Agent Orange'. But even after they had destroyed the jungle they still couldn't find the enemies, and because Agent Orange got into the water supplies and cause many birth defects this, again annoyed the civilians. Rolling Thunder failed because it was very expensive and would have been useful but they couldn't hit the target. Search and Destroy missions failed because they were always ambushed. Because of all of the methods used by the Americans, the Vietnamese had stopped supporting them and started to support the Viet Cong, this then made it harder for the US to fight the Viet Cong as they had more support. After the My Lai massacre on the 16 March 1968, the US had killed over 347 innocent civilians and raped and mutilated many of them.…

War is an undeniably complex subject and although most people know how they feel about the Vietnam War, it is rare for us to agree on exactly what was right and wrong. Despite this, we have the tendency to support facts, and the fact in this case is that Agent Orange had detrimental effects wherever it was spread. Agent Orange is a herbicide that was used by the United States Military during the Vietnam war, it is made up of equal parts 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. Its purpose was to destroy forests and enemy crops during the war (Agent Orange, 2015). Although this substance was already considered an environmental hazard, it was later found that the manufacturing of Agent Orange resulted in a dioxin byproduct. When exposed to dioxins, humans experience…
