"Speak" is about Melinda Sordino, an angst-filled freshman who is hated by all of her "best friends" because she called the cops during the end of the summer senior party. Everyone got busted. Her parents aren't much help either, always fighting about what's best for Melinda and communicating through post-it notes on the refrigerator wall. When the new semester began, there are many kind of clans were formed, but she is not belong to any group. She met a new classmate Heather, although she does not like Heather, she only can be with her.
As a reader, it is not hard to guess what happened that night, but everyone in Melinda's life are completely oblivious as to what plagues her day in and day out. What follows is a truly heart wrenching story about a broken girl trying puzzle out the pieces of herself. I especially enjoyed the incorporation of art, not only in this book, but also in Melinda’s life. It was a superb way to allow Melinda to express herself when words were beyond her reach. It’s a really an amazing book.
However, there is one thing that I can’t understand why would Melinda do it. When everyone misunderstood her, why she didn’t just speak out? The wrong side is not she, why she choice to keep that be a secret and let her friends mistaken her. If she speaks out, maybe will have a different life.
This book is profound. Both of the novel and the movie are awesome. I think I am going to read it again. These books are very important for teens to read, because it teaches them you shouldn't keep quiet about things like rape and abuse.
