Respond to the Overview and the poem by Lazarus. In addition, read over items 1 and 2 (journal, poetry) in the Personal and Creative Responses on pages 68 and 69 of the Study Guide. Choose one of these and write your response in your journal.
I think the meaning of the poem “The New Colossus” is about freedom and liberty and how these things need to be defended. We have fought for the freedom I am talking about. The New Colossus talks about immigrants coming to the USA. Line 6 & 7: “From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome” which shows the USA as welcoming and our welcome disposition will not move just like her glowing beacon hand will not move and its glow is there to light the way for people coming here.
Pg. 68 – Study Guide question 1
Native American literature and poetry is mostly from what I know is spiritual and Indians are very much all about the environment and the land and keeping things in harmony and their writings tend to be this way also.
In my personal opinion, encountering a Native American Culture for the first time would be very memorable. From what I know they are stern but so deep rooted culturally and spiritually that you feel safe and welcome. I think the emotions would be a bit overwhelming just because of how sincere Native Americans are. If a question were to be asked I think it would be, “How in the face of all that has happened to them over the years do they keep a firm grasp on their roots?”
