Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine, also known as a holistic approach, has been around since ancient times. It has a longer history of healing than many of the traditional medicines commonly prescribed and available today. Being dominated by pharmaceutical creations in the last century, alternative medicine is making a fast comeback these days. People are becoming increasingly aware of medical practices from different cultures. Many are frustrated with the damage that conventional medicine can do, its severe side effects, high prices and a long time on the waiting list in a doctor’s office.
Alternative medicine contains a variety of treatments, all ranging from therapies to needles and including meditation, aromatherapy, massage, nutritional healing or chiropractic care to name only few. As a reiki practitioner myself, I’m very fond of these non-invasive methods of healing. Meditation is a great stress reducer, a chiropractor is skilled to move the bones around to help skeletal and muscular pains, aromatherapy stimulates the nervous system and emotional centres of the brain, having a pleasant and calming effect, while acupuncture positively affects the body's various systems, treating countless ailments and ranging from chronic pain relief, weight loss to sleeping aid. The best part of it is that everything is done without any side effects of toxic drugs and harmful consequences to our bodies.
The conventional medicine practitioners tend to be often dismissive of alternative solutions. Such attitude is based on their belief that there is no scientific evidence that holistic medicine actually works, since there has been very little scientific research dedicated to the matter. They forget it has been used for centuries with positive results. Not only patients of alternative medicine are happier with it, it also cures their disease safely. It is a clear choice, comes straight from nature, it has been used from the beginning of time, and is less costly.
I do not argue the fact

In one of the paragraphs of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Black Cat”, the narrator explains how he believes that no one would be able to remit the sin he committed not even God and here comes the sentence “the Most Merciful and Most Terrible God.”. Translating this sentence literally into Arabic will entail very different and controversial impact on the TC audience due to the concept of holiness the word ‘God’ holds in the Arab Culture. Thus, coming up with concept that is at ease with the TT readers and holds some sort of similar ideation existed in the ST would be the best choice for the translator. Accordingly, using the word ‘man’ instead of ‘God’ will create the same effect on the TT audience. Thus, the translation would be arhamo…

In the pursuit of health and well-being, many Americans along with the world, have used Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) over the past decade. In July 30, 2009, National Health Statistic Reports demonstrated on a test conducted in 2007 “that about 38.3% of adults (83 million persons) and 11.8% of children (8.5 million children under the age of 18 years) have used Complementary and alternative medicine” (NHSR, 2009). In this paper, I will define the terms alternative medicine, complementary medicine, and integrative medicine and clarify how these terms differ. I will also describe how conventional medicine plays a role in these three terms. After, I will review the philosophy of CAM and how it relates to or is different from conventional Western medicine. Followed by describing one CAM treatment modality within one of the five NCCAM domains and give an example of how such a therapy could be used as an alternative therapy, a complementary therapy, and an integrative therapy for a specific medical condition. Then, I will explain how each example meets the definition of alternative, complementary, or integrative therapy and support the rationale for each section. Lastly, I will conclude with the results of scientific studies, if available, that show a clinical benefit from the examples selected.…

The ABC series of Complementary Medicine gives insight to who uses complementary medicine, and why someone turns to complementary medicine. As well as the risks and concerns that comes with practicing a less researched, less practiced form of treatment. According to ABC series of Complementary Medicine “nutrition” and “science” “has always been a part in conventional medicine, however traditional practitioners are not taught, and therefore do not practice much in the way of nutritional therapeutics.” Complementary medicine is often downplayed because of the lack of education, and training complementary practitioners have. Therefore traditional medicine is always looked at as the “better” treatment.” ABC series of Complementary Medicine…

Health and illness are dominated by the traditional biomedical model which is based on scientific processes and objectivity. In this approach, illness is a breakdown in the body’s biological systems, and there is a separation of mind and body. However, this rigid perception has been challenged in recent years and healthcare professionals recognise there is a link between the mind and body. The challenges have come from from those practising complementary alternative medicine (CAM). CAM has been defined simply as those therapies which fall outside the traditional biomedical treatments and practices.…
