In his novel, Eaters of the Dead, author Michael Crichton shows how the Volga Northmen were able to defeat their foes, the wendol, by using their intellect instead of their weapons. This is seen in four aspects. The theme of the novel is that physical courage is not enough to preserve your culture and lifestyle: intelligence and superior knowledge are absolutely essential. Conflict between the wendol and the Northmen shows which group has the intelligence to eliminate the other. Symbolism of wisdom, knowledge, and the lack of such things are used by Crichton to illustrate this moral. The juxtaposition of characters emphasizes the cleverness of the Volga Northmen compared to the Venden Northmen.…

A few events that I have helped out with are Give It Back Day, Parent’s Night Out, and the Blood Drive. When I helped out at the Blood Drive, I was a blood buddy and talked to the donators so that they were more comfortable while they were giving blood. Overall, this event had the potential to actually physically save lives and I am glad that I could be a part of it. I went to a client’s house during…

As my community service, I helped out at a facility called Feed My Starving Children. While there, you make food for starving children throughout the world. In high school, I joined Zonta Club to be involved with school and community. Zonta Club gave me an opportunity to reach out to people that had helped others and inspired other students to do the same. One of the unforgettable moments was when I volunteered in a fundraiser to help Alzheimer's disease. It was an event, called Rock-a-Thon, where kids and adults were together to raise awareness those who had the disease. Everyone was participating in the activities that were available in the event. There were games that both kids and elders could play with. They showed stories about the importance of being aware and helping those with Alzheimer’s disease. The event had shaped my views on giving back to the community. Service was not only about giving back, but it is also about learning from others. The joy that the people had even when there was a sickness in their life was incredible. It made me realize how I was fortunate to be living a life without the disease. The fundraiser had made me learn about the people in my town and the obstacles that had to endure and were still enduring. The event had impact the involvement and the appreciation I have over the…

In my Senior Year of being in the National Honor Society, I was excited to volunteer and to help those in need. I helped out with a soup kitchen in Brainerd through another organization that I am in, the Student Council. As I scooped soup into bowls and placed them onto people’s trays, I could see a look of appreciation and gratitude on their faces. This was the first time in my National Honor Society career where I understood just how much my time and effort meant to these individuals. This volunteer opportunity made me realize that a simple meal, smile, and effort to do something helpful and nice can really make someone’s day brighter or easier.…

Having the opportunity to make new, diverse friends around the community impacted me as a person. The people I met not only included the people I served, but also included the people I worked alongside of me in the food pantry. Since I volunteered at the same day and time every week, I was able to become familiar with many new people. In fact, many of these people were even able to connect to my life. One day I had a conversation with a man I volunteered with numerous times whose name was Steve.…

The poem “Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep” by Mary Elizabeth Frye, is written in a very lyrical way. It uses recognizable, modern language and full sentences. The poem also has a lot of imagery present throughout the whole thing. The most obvious, is a large use of personification. The author uses the phrases “I am a thousand winds that blow” and “I am the gentle autumn rain” to personify the idea that after the death of someone, you are still able to sense them in your life.…

Being a two sport athlete playing both Basketball and Football I know if I make it to the Next level in my career one of the first things I would do is invest into giving back to my community and helping charities around the world. Ever since about 6 years old I would always go with my grandma to the local food give pantry at her church, helping give food to families and in need of extra or those who were homeless. We would go every two weeks. At first i never really wanted to go because I thought all homeless people were smelly until I seen young children my age, younger and some older than me. My heart had immediately felt sorrowful, but I knew then that I wanted to help people who were in need and do all I could to make a difference in people’s lives. As I got older I would become more involved and helping not only at church but at my high school. Participating in clubs such as national French honor society and food drives we helped people on special holidays such as Christmas and thanksgiving.…

On December 19, 2007, I experienced firsthand how one random act of kindness could touch my heart, ease my fears and leave me with a renewed faith in mankind. We lived in the central part of Maine. It was still winter at this time and it was freezing. The temperature well below zero. I lived with my mother and my brother in a big white farm house on a large amount of land. We had it rough quite a bit when we were younger so we were very great full for what we received. Everyday we went somewhere different, and about three days into the trip my family group leader had announced to my group that we would be going to the homeless shelter, I was actually thrilled by the fact that we were going. This was the one thing that I actually wanted to do. When we got there, we immediately started passing out food to all the people, after we were done surviving all the people, we had the chance to go and talk to them. Not only was it fun to get to know them and listen to there stories, but the looks on there faces when we were talking to them was honestly so priceless. You could tell how happy they all were that we were there to talk to them and asks them about their…

On November 3rd 2013 I experienced firsthand what a difference I can make in young children’s lives by spending time with them and telling them about a wonderful savior that has a given a free gift and that all we have to do is except him into our lives. I and my family lived in the Central part of Beavercreek Oregon in a 1800 square foot house on an eighth of an acre. We had a pretty good life as kids and there was always food on the table in our house. At the age of 18 I had decided to get involved in my church I had been attending for a little over a year. I talked to the pastor and got a hold of the Children’s ministry Pastor and she set me up to help with a class 4 days later. When I stepped into the classroom I immediately was overwhelmed with joy and a heart serve really serve these young children. After that first day I had many compliments about what an amazing impact I had on these kids and I now volunteer every other week there. Remember that your life can make a huge impact on people young and old. We have a savior that died for us on a cross and we should return that…
