America Dance Essay

So you think you can dance is a television show that airs every year with a new cast. The point of the show is to look for “America’s favorite dancer”. Many men and women from across the country audition to be on the show and only one of them can be “America’s favorite dancer”. For the last few years, at the end of each season, they travel on tour with some of the dancers from previous seasons the “all stars” and that seasons final dancers. They perform many of the dance routines from the show, and created new dances specifically for the tour. There were over thirty-five dances in this show and every single one was amazing. From hip-hop, to jazz and lyrical all the dances were mesmerizing. Being lucky enough to have third row seats, I could
see how hard the dancers worked; from the sweat dripping off their foreheads to the bruises on their legs. It truly was an amazing night and such a great experience. Three pieces caught my eye, a hip-hop number performed by three men, an unforgettable contemporary dance, and lastly an emotional lyrical hip-hop piece. Even though all of the dances were fascinating, one of them stood out to me.
This dance consisted of three men; all of them break dancers and krumpers, they formed a hip-hop number that made everyone stand up for applaud at the end. They all had different styles and show cased one another’s talents. The different moves they did defied gravity. From standing on their head and sliding, to jumping over one another. This dance was mainly displaying what each dancer could do. The different tricks they could do really impressed me, having know idea how they can do some of the stuff they do without breaking their necks. They all used the stage and definitely moved around frequently. It was an entertaining piece that made the audience pumped. They popped and locked everything on the base of the music, which made their movements look bigger. They worked together to pull off some surprising tricks like throwing one six feet in the air and were careful when they all jumped over each other at the same time. Their costumes were normal street clothes, which is appropriate for a hip-hop number. The sound was loud, had a high base, and could feel the vibrations under my seat, which makes the dance more exciting. They used many different colored lights on the stage and many visual effects were used, it was a crazy dance that matched the tricks they
did. One emotional contemporary dance that got everyone teary eyed was about a mother and son. The mother is ill and the son is there for her guiding her, the son is trying to “fix her” and they share an amazing dance in their imagination, but in reality she cant. It is an emotional story that touched each person in the audience. In the beginning the mother is not well but when the music tempo starts going faster she is healed and she feels better but then in the end it goes back to where she needs her son to help her stand on her own. This dance means something that happens in this world and family passes away, and become sick. Their loved ones want to help them through many struggles. Identifying the parts of the dance when she was sick and the parts where she was healthy were easy to see, they played the role of mother and son well even though they are around the same age. While they were dancing the emotion was so raw on their face, it was easy to relate to their characters because they played the roll so well. Another dance that affected the audience was about a couple who are in love but their relationship is rocky, they fight constantly. This piece is a lyrical hip-hop, which means they take hip-hop moves and combine them with soft music that you would normally dance to a lyrical piece. At the start of the dance, the girl is packing her bags when her boyfriend walks in and tries to convince her to stay. She loves him but she knows the right thing to do is leave. This is what many couples go through in life and these two dancers expressed it in movement. The two performed the characters correctly and made the audience emotional as well as themselves. The crowd could tell what the story was about without having to be told. The performers worked together to pull off this performance and accomplish what the piece was about to others. It is a dark dance so they paired the dance with the lighting but you could still see the performance. They used the whole stage, moved around vigorously, and used movements that were very technical. It was a very interesting piece that many men and women can relate. The story this piece told, society can relate to, there are many stories you hear over the news where there are cases of domestic violence because couples refuse to get out of bad relationships. These dances were mind blowing; they make me want to join the performers up on the stage and dance. All of the pieces told a story and it is incredible that all of these entertainers can all perform over thirty-five dances in one night. Not many people do not have the energy they do to pull off all those dances and still look amazing doing them. Commoners would be out of breath by dance five; the energy these people have is insane. These performers are true athletes and they inspire many aspiring dancers around the world to get up and put on a show, as they did. The hip-hop dance showed off the talents that break-dancers have and the muscularity to complete the different moves. The contemporary dance was beautiful it touched many hearts and the audience stood for applause in the end. The lyrical hip-hop spoke too many about relationship problems and hopefully made others realize they are in a poor relationship and need to leave. Many show viewers are excited for the nest season of this show to release, and for another concert to premiere because this show made me speechless. Many will not forget this unforgettable experience.
