America in Comparison to Other Countries
America is constantly failing when it comes to education. Compared to other countries, our math skills, science skills, and language skills are all severely lower. China has more honor students in their schooling system than the United States has of just regular students. Other countries view us as being lazy and unintelligent, which is not entirely untrue. The grammar skills of students in the United States have decreased over the years. This is because the curriculum in the schooling systems does not focus on grammar as much as it should. If more grammar classes were added during high school, our country could be on the right path to catching up with the education in other countries.
Every day, kids are exposed to poor grammar. Many songs, television shows, movies, and magazines use incorrect grammar. Songs often include phrases instead of complete thoughts, and some songs even contain words that don’t exist. If that is all that students see and hear, they won’t be able to make a distinction between the correct and incorrect way to speak. Text messaging has also caused kids to have poor writing skills. Texting causes kids to write by using fragments, incorrect spelling, and poor punctuation. Americans don’t take the time to write correctly because they are so worried about getting things done quickly. U.S. citizens don’t want to be bothered with making sure their punctuation is correct or their comma is in the right place. Students need repeated, daily practice to get away from the high-speed lifestyle they are used to, in order to be able to utilize grammar in the right way. Focusing more on grammar during English classes will reinforce proper grammar, and eliminate the issues that text messaging and new technology bring.
As a country, understanding grammar can impact our lives. We need grammar to succeed in everyday life. When applying to a college or a job, grammar is extremely important. College essays are a major part in being accepted

Barber, in "America Skips School", makes a very compelling concise argument of how the entire system is in crisis. Between low expectations, underpaid teachers, the mindset of consumerism being all invasive, and the fact that America simply doesn 't care about quality education, America is slipping…

The use of appropriate spoken and written grammar is essential for a teacher so as we don’t offend some parents by making them appear or feel inferior or as if they are incapable or “beneath” us. Spoken and written grammar also allows the teacher to expand a student’s written and spoken vocabulary. Allowing parents and students to feel comfortable to question when they might misunderstand also allows them a greater understanding of individual expectations, educational expectations, and allows a “comfort zone” to understand everything more clearly. When teachers understand behavior and emotional constraints tensions ease, communication becomes clearer and everyone is more satisfied.…

Our educational system in America is highly inefficient. It focuses more on standardized testing than it does on helping the students understand the curriculum. I have seen teachers that care more about their paycheck than the well-being of their own students. On top of all this, once you're out of high school, there is college. Of course, it is not required for you to attend. But it's almost impossible to get a well paying job without a degree. To make matters worse, college is unbelievably expensive, making it nearly impossible to go without putting yourself in debt, because the average cost for tuition for a public college in America is $9,139. For example, my own mother almost didn’t pass high school, because her government teacher always put her down and how she was going to fail. My mom was never able to get a college level education because her parents could not afford to give her that privilege.…

I think which countries a government decides to trade with determines who that country is. Let's look at this in terms of people. I'm young, 22, and I'm just starting to get out in the world, I've experienced many times how the wrong friends can negatively impact my own image. Even who my family is can have that negative effect. My gene pool is filled with every drug you can imagine. I don't tell this to employers. It almost cost me the job I wanted. I wanted to change positions, something with better hours, higher pay, better chance of being recognized for a promotion and more enjoyable work; I was able to get the position but after my boss learned of my family, she treated me different, as if I was going to go down the same road. Why wouldn't she? Every person in my family does, so what makes me different? That's an extreme situation though. Let's say it's just a couple of friends that are troublemakers, mostly misdemeanors. If your name gets attached to one of those misdemeanors, it's tainted forever.…

Is America at risk of losing its competitive edge? Is America public education system in trouble? The research clearly suggests that America’s public education is behind its international counterparts in educational benchmarks. The Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA, gives tests to high school students across a range of countries. The evaluation finds that the U.S. ranks behind 16 other economies in terms of student literacy—the ability to read, integrate and evaluate texts; U.S. student rankings on mathematics are even lower (Kenny 12). Also, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) found that 2 out of 3 eight-graders can’t read proficiently and most will never catch up and…

People’s grammar should be judged by the position they are applying for versus all the jobs in general. In Kyle Wiens “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why.” Wiens argues that if someone doesn’t have good grammar then they also don’t pay attention to detail. But in John McWhorter’s article “Good Applicants with Bad Grammar,” he believes differently than Wiens. McWhorter believes that each person doesn’t have to have good grammar for every job. For example, I used to work at subway I always had to pay attention to how many veggies I was putting on and the amount of meat and so where in the sandwich making process was good grammar required, but I did pay attention to detail which got the job done. So Wiens wasn’t completely correct in his argument that poor grammar also means people don’t pay attention to detail. I agree with McWhorter that grammar should be based on the certain job you with to have, and each person whether they have good grammar or not should still be given a fair shot in an interview.…

As a modern international “super power”, the United States has, according to some, always boasted of their citizens, democracy, our military prowess, and so on to be the best of the best. We imagine ourselves to be in the place that everyone else in the world is wishing they could be, and this belief has indeed become the cornerstone of patriotism in our country. However, in the case of our public education system, when we consider the facts and statistics of the our true performance matched up against several other developed countries, the United States and it’s students show shockingly low performances in every major subject on standardized tests. For example, in Marian Wright Edelman’s article, “Cuts in Education: A Failing Choice”, she mentions, “The United States ranks 24th among 30 developed countries in overall educational achievement for 15-year-olds. A study of education systems in 60 countries ranks the United States 31st in math achievement and 23rd in science achievement for 15-year-olds.”…

Some argue that texting invites writers to become more creative with their grammar. Cullington says that, “Texting also helps to spark student’s creativity…”(364), some people text so much that there are only a handful of ways to say something and eventually, a texter will have to evolve their grammatical skills to articulate their ideas into a message that doesn’t carry the same dull grammar that someone would use every day. Learning to evolve your grammar means that you will have to practice what you already know as well as things you don’t know. The article stated, “... that it [texting] not only teaches elements of writing but provides extra practice to those who struggle with the conventions of writing” (Cullington 364). Sometimes when I text messages to my friends, I do not understand how to spell a word or I incorrectly punctuate my sentences; thanks to autocorrect I can learn from my mistakes and it gives me the practice that I need for preparation of writing an essay or some sort of article in school. Texting is a tool and if used correctly, can help students create a better foundation for their grammatical…

In America, we are so lucky to have the best of almost everything. Our quality of life is much better than any other country. We are so technologically advanced compared to almost every other place on earth. But, lately world studies have shown our test scores and education quality in general is lower than many other nations. Many say that this is because of our obsession with standardized testing. Crazy amounts of testing cause severe stress in our students and teachers all over the nation, they are not a reliable measure of student performance, and our obsession with standardized testing robs kids of learning valuable information, and just learning for a test.…
