With the growth of new technology after the Industrial Revolution, new technology allowed European nations to begin to expand their control over lesser countries. Many people wanted to gain these lands for a variety of reasons. First of all, with new lands added to major countries, the economy would be able to expand. Secondly, many Europeans wanted more land so that their country could achieve national greatness. Thirdly, as greater powers were taking control of other lands they believed themselves superior and more intelligent. To start off, many workers in the European nations wanted to push for imperialism because they wanted more room for their businesses. This group
of people really wanted a push for imperialism due to the fact that they demanded raw materials. One of the main groups of people were the shipowners. They needed a place to keep their vessels so that they were protected. Another supporting group of workers were the bankers. If more land was controlled by a certain nation, then that nation would have the ability to tax more people. Now, the banks would be gaining more money compared to what they had before the new land was controlled. Parker T. Moon stated that “Banks make loans to colonies and backward countries for building railways and steamship lines…” This quote further shows how the banks were able to give loans to new colonies so that they could build railroads for the controlling nation to use. To conclude, the economy would increase due to imperialism because the more land a nation has the more room for development.
Back in the late 19th and 20th century, the amount of power a nation had was usually viewed from how much land the nation was able to control. Imperialism was pushed for in Europe due to the fact that many nations wanted more land. The map of Africa, on document nine showed how France has taken over much of Africa and that they were becoming a major power threat to others. Taking lesser lands also makes other nations fear France because they are rising in strength and power. To conclude, Europe’s push for new lands made them a greater nation compared to others and further pushed for imperialism.
The final most important force that drove imperialism was that certain races believed themselves superior to other races. Cecil Rhodes stated that “Britons are the finest race in the world… the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for human race…” This helps further prove the point that race was a major factor in imperialism. Britain believed that if they took control of lesser countries than it would actually benefit the rest of the world because they were better than everyone else. At the same time, many other major nations felt the need to imperialise because they thought that the lesser countries could not control their own lands. These lands were “no match” for other stronger nations. In conclusion, the major social forces that were the cause of imperialism due to the fact that people believed their race superior to others.
Without these major social, economical and political forces imperialism wouldn’t have been such a major factor in France’s growth. First of all, as new lands were added to nations their economy would grow larger and wealthier. Secondly, as European nations took control of lesser lands they proved their strength and made others fear their power. Finally, when land was taken from smaller countries the conquering nation believed themselves superior. In conclusion, without these major forces imperialism wouldn’t have made a large impact on Europe’s future.
