It is different from person to person what you think is a good life. I believe it to be the same in Amish cul-ture. Still the general picture tells us that good life for most Amish people is to follow the rules which decide how the Amish must live. Those rules are named the “Ordnung.” As an example referring to the Ordnung you are not allowed to make use of electricity, cars or other modern facilities. Following and living by these rules the Amish people believe in and are sure that you will go to heaven. This is the most essential part of Amish culture. I do want to go to heaven when I die, but it is not something which controls my life comple-tely or determines how I live my life. A good life for me is when you get exciting challenges in live which can broaden my horizon. When you study the Amish, it seems like they have no worries than being permitted to enter paradise. When they are baptized they live their lives quietly and take things as they come. This is what the outside world could learn from. Despite this, I could never live a life in the Amish culture. I think it would feel like living in a bubble, not really having any contact with the outside world. I believe that I would long for the freedom to have the faith in what I want and not having the freedom to experience life to the full. I am sure that most people are being baptized because of the safe environment in the Amish world. You are being watched and cared for. I could not endure not having a private life. It must be tuff to live by these rules all the time and be afraid to break them. If you do break them you might be excluded from your family as well as your entire social network. It is quite the same in another Christian culture called Jehovah’s witnesses. They are not old fashioned but they almost have the same i-deology as the Amish.
