An Analysis Of Colin Kaepernick's Protests
The United States of America claims in its first amendment, that all citizens have the right to freedom of speech. On August 26, 2016 NFL star, Colin Kaepernick, gained attention for his silent protests by not standing during the national anthem. Kaepernick is enforcing the Black Lives Matter Movement by not standing for the star spangled banner. The 49ers quarterback states, “I am going to continue to stand with the people who are being oppressed.” His protests have caught the eye of other NFL stars and have influenced them to follow in his footsteps. Many people are divided on whether or not his actions are ethical. Kaepernick’s decision to sit during the anthem is disrespectful, inconsiderate, and unpatriotic. This is a problem for a number of reasons.
Regardless of the stand that Kaepernick is trying to make, he is wrong for not acknowledging the national anthem. NFL quarterback Drew Brees states, “that Kaepernick is insulting a flag that is sacred, and which has given him the freedom to speak out”. Not only is Kaepernick insulting the flag, but he is also insulting our veterans. Our veterans have protected and served this country and for Kaepernick to disregard that is unprofessional. In order for him to be successful with his cause he needs to find a new way to engage people; rather than not standing for an anthem that is meant to accolade our veterans. By not acknowledging the national anthem he is offending the veterans of this country who have served. By refusing to stand for a national anthem is not going to solve anything, it will only anger and divide people even more. If Kaepernick was serious about his protest, he would go about raising awareness for it in a different way. Instead, he should actually look into the “police brutality” accounts that occur rather than just believing everything that appears on social

In the Newsela article “Colin Kaepernick has 49ers fans burning their Jerseys” Cindy Boren writes about the current issue in the NFL when Colin Kaepernick took a kneel and refused to stand during the national anthem. She continues to write about the effects that took place shortly after. One fan sent a video of him torching a jersey while the national anthem played, and another fan recording, setting fire to a Kaepernick jersey and scoffed at him telling him to “Get the F out of the country.” However, others think differently of the situation. Colin stated “I am not going to stand up and show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” Chip Kelly, his coach, supported him protesting. A former teammate Anquan…

It has been argued that Colin Kaepernick kneeling while the National Anthem is playing, is absolutely ridiculous, is not showing support for love of this country, and not showing support to the veterans. In “The Perilous Fight,” Jim Brown, a NFL Hall of Famer and a civil rights activist. Told Time, “I would not do anything that has to do with respecting the flag or the national anthem. I don’t think it’s appropriate.” In other words Jim Brown would challenge the normal of standing for the Anthem, no matter the severity of the situation. For this reason opponents argue that Colin Kaepernick kneeling down is not right for him to be testing the flag; but it’s not also right for the police of America to be able to go on a killing spree and have…

The take a knee movement is not the first protest the National Anthem has seen, it is just the latest in a long history of “unpatriotic behavior.” Perhaps the most infamous protest was a result of the black power salute held by Tommie Smith and John Carlos in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, “they didn’t [take a knee]. Instead they raised a fist” (Brown). The Civil Rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s were a time of upheaval for various minority groups of American society, including the black rights movement. Holding a fist instead of placing a hand over the heart got the gold and bronze medals respectively strip from Smith and Carols, for calling attention to real problems that still exist in our country. These brave men “wore beads and a scarf to protest lynchings. And when the national anthem was played, they lowered their heads in defiance and raised their fists in a Black Power salute that rocked the world” (Brown). These acts of defiance have set a stage for other individuals to speak out again the injustice plaguing our society. The downplay of such circumstances is unpatriotic and inhumane, more so than refusing to stand during the National…

On January 20th, Jackie Evancho stood on the steps of the U.S capitol and sang the national anthem for the incoming 45th President Donald Trump. Being able to sing the star spangled banner for the inauguration is quite the honor but Jackie received all sorts of feedback for representing Donald Trump. Throughout his campaign Donald had made anti-women claims and statements. Many people believe that performing for Trump amounts to some kind of capitulation to the anti-American ideals of the Trump campaign and transition. A day after the Inauguration a Women’s march packed the United States so there was a lot of controversy towards why Jackie would represent our President. Understanding the situation and the opportunity to represent the U.S, the lyrics of the National Anthem as well as the manner in which it is performed by Jackie Evancho misrepresents our country’s opinions and values regarding freedom and patriotism.…

In Anthem Equality says “For the coming of that day shall I fight, I and my sons and my chosen friends. For the freedom of Man. For his rights. For his life. For his honor.(104)” Everyone is supposed to be seen as equal to their brothers in this society, but Anthem slowly detached himself from them. He wanted something for himself. Like he says in the book. He wants freedom, rights, life, and honor. He also says “What is freedom? Freedom from what? There is nothing to take a man’s freedom away, save other men. To be free, a man must be free of his brothers. That is…

These actions were viewed in all different way and from all different types of people. From your everyday fan to players, coaches, owners and even the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump. And not everyone was in favor of Kaepernick choice to protest during the National Anthem. “I agree that America is not perfect. I agree that there are a lot of issues with minorities in this country. And I agree that we should do something about it. But I don't know if the most effective way is to sit down when the National Anthem of a country that has provided you freedom and is provided you $60 million a year is the best way to do it, when there are black minorities that are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan that are protecting our freedom for less than $20,000 a year” (Alejandro Villanueva, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman, Aug. 29, 2016). But the biggest moment during the last 13 months happened on September 22 2017 when president Donald Trump stated “Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects the flag, to say get that son of a bitch off the field right now. He's fired. He's fired”. This single quote would spark outrage…

Rather than bringing attention to the main issue of kneeling for the anthem, his words caused hatred toward him. Due to these words, even more people knelt for the national anthem, not to rebel against unity, but against Trump himself. The Pittsburgh Steelers rebelled by staying in the locker room during the entire national anthem. Mike Tomlin was ready to support his players no matter what by stating, “I'm going to be supportive of that, as Americans you have that right. But whatever we do we're going to do 100 percent, we're going to do together”…

The ongoing controversy taking place in the National Football League (NFL) is the protesting during the playing of the national anthem. The protest was originally started in the 2016-2017 season by Colin Kaepernick, who played quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers at the time. He, in fact, sat for the anthem and received a great deal of backlash from the public. Many players followed suit by kneeling, sitting, locking arms and showing solidarity. The backlash has continued and some fans are even boycotting the NFL. These NFL players should not be criticised due to the fact what they’re actually protesting- racial injustice for African Americans- is being completely being ignored because the flag is involved.…

Many at times people protest due to how insecure, and how they feel hurt towards certain issues. However, I do not think it is right for people to intentionally carry out an unlawful act to deliberately disturb the peace of others. The First Amendment guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and petition their government, but not in the form of a riot. The decision taken by the group of protest is terrifying and unspeakable. Even though they were exercising their first amendment right, their actions were unjustifiable. Many Americans are deeply connected with the United state Flag because it is the representation of their freedom, rights, and liberties. Many people have died for it, so I felt their actions dishonored the sacrifices…
