An Analysis Of Jacob's Relationship With The Herdsmen Of Haran
POSITIVE HORIZONTAL RELATIONSHIP

Jacob’s relationship with the herdsmen of Haran outlines also how building of positive horizontal relationships could work to one’s advantage. When Jacob left Canaan to Syria on the advice of his parents, he began to create positive relationships that aided his rising. He displayed proper home grooming by courteously and respectfully approaching the herdsmen he encountered when he entered Syria for the first time and this became the key that opened the door to Laban’s house.

His approach was welcoming and reassuring. It clearly showed that he was a relational person. The people had a buy in to his person before proceeding to attend to his inquiries and he presented the platform. Their answer created confidence and insight as to the friendly and relational attributes of these shepherds.
Relationship builders define the objective of any relationship they are entering into. Jacob’s initial contact or interface with the herdsmen of Haran was basically to determine if they were from Haran and if they knew his maternal uncle Laban. Once these facts were established, his doubts were cleared and it was evident that he was on the right path, it was only then that he proceeded to share a bit of the knowledge he has about his vocation -animal
