Being an apostle Paul could have easily ordered Philemon to makeup with Onesimus, he could have easily ordered him to forgive Onesimus and he could have easily ordered Onesimus to return back to his master Philemon, however he did no such thing and in fact he helped both men mend and restore their relationship. When Paul refers to himself as a “Servant of Christ” rather than an apostle he is sharing with his readers that he is a humble man that was bestowed upon him throughout his journey as a gospel minister. Faith is a key term for me in this essay, so I found it interesting when Paul shares a moment in the letter where he talks about “faith in Christ makes claims on the lives of the faithful.” Philemon also remembers the claims of faith on his life when he is deciding on how to respond to Paul’s letter. In the Letter in the part of the letter in which Paul talks about thanksgiving he thanks Philemon for his faith by stating “ I thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints; and I pray that fellowship of your faith may become effective through the knowledge of every good thing which is in [us] for Christ’s sake.” One of the most important things in this letter is when Paul says, “Every task that we perform, every calling we hear, every burden we respond to, every act of worship and every opportunity to witness should aim to strengthen our FAITH.” The reason that this sentence is so important is because we are only human, and everyone will go through troubles, sufferings and hardships at one point or anther in their life.
