In order to ascertain a student 's knowledge and skill set, it is essential to use initial and diagnostic assessment. It is a journey of personal discovery for the student with their learning experience, with the tutor finding out about the abilities of the students to match the curriculum to the student 's needs. The initial assessment is there to measure potential gaps in knowledge, the student 's aims; whether they will need any support, but it is important to state that each student is unique. The initial assessment is like a creating menu combining prior information and testing to create a learning plan.
It is not just a case of looking at the student 's abilities, but seeing them holistically. Looking into their social skills, their likes and dislikes, interests, health, personal attitudes and circumstances, their self-worth and how much motivation they currently have.

Within my industry, this does need to be taken into account. A student may have studied anatomy and physiology online prior to attending a Pilates course and as a tutor I cover aspects of the online learning but I can 't take it for granted that the students can retain all the information and know exactly everything.
