Analysis Of Living Off Into The Wild
Chris McCandless, a five feet seven inches twenty-four years old teenager, decided to live off into the wild with lack of resources. He abandoned his yellow Datsun, only ten pounds of rice, cheap leather hiking boots, and a 0.22 Caliber, a rifle which is too weak to hunt for big animals. He believes he was prepared to live off into the wild, denying assistance from Jim Gallien, last person to see Chris McCandless before he takes off into the wild. McCandless did not grow up in a normal family. When he was little, his parents are always arguing. As an older brother, he always protects his younger sister, Carine. Since he vision everything goes to his plan, he did not realize how brutal nature can be. Since McCandless left out the real thought in his plan, he did not realize the power of nature is far beyond his own ability. Since he was sick from eating plants, he decided to walk back out from the wild to ask for assistance. However as he walked out, he comes across Teklanika River, which at that time, it was a flood. If McCandless car were nearby, he wouldn’t have to face the river. However, as a weak swimmer, Chris McCandless is unable to cross the river “ Disaster… Rained in. River look impossible. Lonely. Scared” (170). Since he never visions the power of nature will be in his way, he ignores the power of nature in his plan which cost him to be stuck in the wild as he tried to evacuate. In his plan, he relies on wild plants for food resources, that’s why he brings limited food with him as he walks into the wild. Although he found some eatable plant, he never realizes the plant, wild potato seed, is slowly poisoning him. “The poison had rendered him too weak to move… “too weak to walk out” (Krakauer The New Yorker 10). From the quote, it tells that McCandless never thought of the wild plants is poison and it will cause his life. The author of Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer, appeals to pathos by including how Chris’s death affected his family members. Throughout Chris’s adventure in the Southwest and eventually to Alaska, he rarely mentions his family, showing his selfishlessness side. The audience themselves only have a vague grasp of Chris’s family. However, in chapter 13, the author includes an interview of his family members about Chris’s death - especially emphasizing Carine’s point of view. After receiving the news about her older brother's death, “she found that her appetite vanished, and she lost ten pounds” (131). As her health was declining, it shows an emotional reaction to the audience by showing how devastatingly Carine’s everyday life changed. Her loss of…

McCandless‘s death was caused by the consumption of moldy roots. McCandless knew the roots weren’t poisonous, however he didn’t realize that the mold on the roots would be toxic. Krakauer states, “The plant that poisoned him wasn’t toxic, per se; McCandless simply had the misfortune to eat moldy seeds. An innocent mistake, it was nevertheless sufficient to end his life” (Krakauer, 194). After an itinerant journey around the country, McCandless lost his life due to the consumption of a plant that wasn’t even know to be poisonous. On May 10, 1991, McCandless writes this in his journal, “It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant joy of living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found. God it’s great to be alive! Thank you. Thank you” (Krakauer 37). His sense of rectitude, and enthusiasm about his journey does not allow him to be weighed down by the insensate world around him. McCandless is attempting to ‘live to the fullest’ and find the ‘real meaning’ of life. McCandless died a young and tragic death, however he lived his life the way he wished too, and always pushed himself, leaving him on his deathbed…

Krakauer wrote that Chris McCandless was, "green, and he overestimated his resilience, but was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on a little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice"(Krakauer 182). In this quote it seems that Krakauer thought that McCandless was well equipped with his skills, so that made moderately prepared to survive in any situation. I feel that McCandless was rather prepared, yet again he never could have been fully prepared for the unexpected. My opinion is that McCandless was vaguely aware of the struggles that he would encounter in the Alaskan wilderness such as his epiphany that "happiness is only real when shared" was realized when his body was dying of starvation. I believed that he found what he was…
