Hour 5
Eulogy for Chris McCandless
Chris McCandless was a caring man who lived a short, extraordinary life full of more adventure than most people experience in their lifetime. In his early years, Chris greatly excelled at running in high school and maintained a high GPA in college at Emory University in Georgia. After mailing his final transcript to his family, Chris embarked on a new journey and created a whole new identity for himself. “No longer would he answer to Chris McCandless; he was now Alexander Supertramp, master of his own destiny.” (Krakauer 23)
Chris made acquaintances with many different people throughout his epic journey, including Wayne Westerberg who became his best friend. His nomadic lifestyle took him to many different states, and even to Mexico for a brief period. “On April 15, 1992 Chris McCandless departed Carthage, South Dakota… His great Alaskan odyssey was under way.” (Krakauer 157) Chris was thrilled to be wandering into the Alaskan wilderness, and he was truly prepared and stocked up for his adventure. His hunting was very successful, and he thoroughly enjoyed his two months in the wild. Unfortunately, Chris could not cross the Teklanika River back to civilization and returned back to the bus where he had been living during his stay in Alaska. He survived off of his hunting for many more weeks, but passed away after he mistakenly ate poisonous potato seeds.
In the end, “Chris McCandless was at peace.” (Krakauer 199) He dared to live his life exactly how he wanted to; unlike many of us here today. Chris’ life is an example to us all of how we should pursue our dreams because life is short. My condolences to Chris’ family and friends. He was a wonderful man who will be missed by many, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
