The Allied Forces sought to perform joint operations during Operation HUSKY, but the joint operational concepts taken for granted today were underdeveloped in 1943. The awkward attempt by the Allies to command and control this operation combined with the unfamiliar practice of integrating joint functions prevented the Allies from fully from recognizing and exploiting the opportunities for decisive action on Sicily. This paper first evaluates the operational level command and control of Operation HUSKY against the three attributes of mission command, generally finding underdeveloped intent and gaps in trust and understanding. Secondly, it evaluates the integration of two joint functions, fires and intelligence, finding that both functions were…

In collaborative negotiation the approach is to treat the relationship as an important and valuable element. The competitive approach to negotiation assumes a fixed pie, zero-sum, win-lose situation. In collaborative negotiation, it is assumed that the pie can be enlarged by finding things of value to both parties, thus creating a win-win situation where both parties can leave the table feeling that they have gained something of value. The collaborative approach to negotiation seeks to convert individual wants into a single problem and to bring both parties together to work on solving this problem. By converting individual positions and wants into separated problems, the people can be freed up from jealous and personal attachment to their requirements so they can then take a more objective and equitable position from which they can act in a more collaborative way.…

Chapter one explains that when negotiating, it is important to maintain positions at all times. A position is where you stand in an argument and defines what you are negotiating for. As you argue your posistion, you are less likely to bend on that position because you continue to defend it, the stronger bond you form with it. The chapter also discusses the two types of negotiation that are usually seen which include either soft or hard negotiation. In hard negotiation, both parties are considered adversaries and holds the negotiation as a competition in which only one party can win. Soft negotiation focuses on maintaining a friendly relationship between the two parties involved and is more likely to promote a loss in order to make a deal. In both…

Negotiation this is a need and willingness to discuss issues, consult our clients, colleagues and management in reaching optimum solutions to problems and issues. Sometimes it involves compromise or confrontation, as well as collaboration. In order to negotiate with team members and management, the team player must be clear about the negotiation and be prepared to compromise. There is some evidence which suggests teams go through a common process of development, Tuckman (1965) has reviewed the literature on this. He says…

This course will be taught through a combination of lectures as well as simulations and demonstrations, in order to make ADR more interesting and more understandable to business students. The topic of negotiation discussed in this course is different from deal-making negotiation that leads to the conclusion of contracts and transactions. Over the past 8 weeks there has been a lot that I have learned about myself as a person with inner reflection in my negotiation style. Negotiation is a skill that I thought people have to be born with. Although people can be born better suited with negotiation skills; the skill is also a craft that can be taught and learned. People must be able to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses and build off their strengths to become a better negotiator. Lewicki, Saunders and Barry (2011) state that while some people may look like born negotiators, negotiation is fundamentally a skill involving analysis and communication that everyone can learn. I think that the questionnaires that I took really amplified what I need to work on as a negotiator. Negotiation is a part of everyday life for everyone, in home life and in personal life and becoming a better negotiator can impact our lives positively in both. This paper will reflect and summarize what I learned about myself doing both questionnaires and how I plan on improving my negotiation skills using this class going forward.…

First negotiations in this class showed me that I was not prepared well for them. It was difficult for me, because I was not sure if I was negotiating in the right way or not. I think that when you have real negotiations you have more time to do your homework, to set up your goals and results which you want to get. It is always easier when you know your target, points which you can lose or gain. In my case, I realized how to do it after the third lesson when we tried to negotiate about multiple issues. Negotiations are not simple things. Sometimes you need to lose in some moments to gain in main one. Now I can see it, I can feel when it is important something for a person or not. In negotiations you always have a chance to know it. If somebody gives up very quickly it means that this issue or moment does not play a great role for him. Moreover, in the beginning of this course I thought that I am a…

Negotiation according to Eunson (2008, p.493), is the ‘interaction between two sets of individuals, groups or nations to settle disagreements through compromise and concessions’ (Eunson 2008, p 493). Employing a negotiating strategy such as compromise, requires participants to sacrifice something for the benefit of the group; therefore it is not always the ideal or accepted approach as it can result in dissatisfaction and not necessarily attain the best long term solution (Galanes & Adams 2007, p.369). Negotiation can be useful in non-complex disagreements, as an alternative when a collaboration strategy has not been successful or when limited time for conflict resolution is available (Galanes & Adams 2007, p.369). Although negotiation and particularly compromise definitely has its place, collaboration as a strategy usually produces more group satisfaction, cohesion and more creative and positive outcomes to conflict resolution whilst reducing the potentially harmful effects of conflict in group work (Engleberg & Wynn 1997, p.167). Soundly…
