Analysis Of Sacrifices In Annie John And Marita's Bargain

In the face of adversity, what causes some individuals to prevail when others to fail? Both Annie John from “A Walk to the Jetty” by Jamaica Kincaid and Marita in Malcolm Gladwell’s essay, “Marita’s Bargain” address this subject. Both girls sacrifice much in order to succeed; they realize that an education will afford them opportunities they might not otherwise have. While both girls make personal sacrifices, it is clear that Marita sacrifices are greater. In the face of adversity, their self-discipline is admirable. The enrollment of KIPP is something very competitive with a long waiting list (Gladwell 28) when Marita attends we find out about the hard schedule the students like Marita have; many of the students wake up at very early hours of the morning to go to school and get home late, the students learn a variety of subjects like thinking skills, 90 minutes of English and math except fifth graders they do 2 hours of math every day, 1 hour of science and social science and 1 hour of music twice a week (Gladwell 224); apart from the heavy week during Saturdays the students go school and during summer the go from 8am to 2pm.
