David and Louise Turpin shackled their children to furniture with chains so they couldn't escape, slowly starving them to death, and only allowed them to shower twice a year, as previously reported by Dearly.
The children suffered at the hands of their parents for years until their 17-year-old daughter bravely escaped from her home, rescuing herself and her 12 siblings, aged 2 to 29 years old.
NBC News reports Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin painted a horrifying picture of the children's lives, which included being beaten, choked, and locked away in filthy, …show more content…
The mother and father also enjoyed waving food in front of their malnourished kids faces. They would buy apple and pumpkin pies and tease the children with them, keeping the food in front of them, but refusing to let them eat any.
Their cruelty crossed over into torturing the kids with new toys they would buy for them, but never opening them up to let them play. According to ABC News, Hestrin said:
"The only thing the children were allowed to do in their room or chained up was to write in journals, we now have recovered those journals -- hundreds of them. And we are combing through them."
The District Attorney said the children's health was neglected during their captivity, with the kids rarely seeing a doctor and never being taken to a dentist. He also described their unusual sleeping pattern, typically going to bed between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. "These individuals sleep all day and are up all night."

Hestrin said the toddler was the only child "who was getting enough to eat."
The youngest child appeared to be so well taken care of that torture charges were not included against the parents since the 2-year-old was not starved, according to KTLA.
According to NBC News, Hestrin described discovering the grisly crimes against the children after the 17-year-old broke free from her home after planning her escape for two years. He said:
“In more than 20 years as a prosecutor in Riverside County, this is one of the most disturbing cases I've seen. We are fully prepared to seek justice in this case and to do so in a way that protects all of these victims from further harm.”
The torture allegedly began while the Turpins lived near Fort Worth, Texas, for 17 years and grew worse when David and Louise moved the family to California in 2010.
The Turpins were charged with 12 counts of torture, seven counts of abuse on a dependent adult, 12 counts of false imprisonment and six counts of child abuse. David received an extra charge of committing a lewd act on a child by force with the alleged victim being one of Turpin's daughters, according to NBC
