In many of these cases the child has been the target of abuse from an adult who is not the natural parent (typically a step-father). While the particular circumstances of each case are different, there are also areas of considerable similarity. In particular, the following features recur time after time:…

(Heide 1994) The family is usually isolated either by geography or behavior and lifestyle from surrounding community. (Mones 1992) The participation in the NSM had isolated the Hall family and they retained their small social circle within the NSM. One or both parents are substance abusers, particularly alcohol. Jeff Hall, the father, was allegedly drunk on a consistent basis. He was also allegedly drunk on the morning of the murder. The crime is always premeditated, in the sense that abused children have thought about killing the abuser for many years. In Joseph’s case he not only thought about it, but had been encouraged to do so, after watching the episode of Criminal Minds. The parent is often sleeping or in a defenseless position when the crime occurs, which does not fit legal definition of “self-defense”. The most tragic characteristics of parricide offenders are that warnings have been ignored, or law enforcement, social services and other agencies repeatedly return the child(s) back to the abuser. Child protective services not only made numerous visits to the Hall’s home, but were aware of the alleged physical and sexual abuse, and did not take the children away or implement some kind of…

Infanticide is the killing of an infant from birth to 12 months, and child homicide is the murder of a child in general. Northern University criminologist James Alan Fox collects data each year from the FBI supplemental Homicide Division to compile reports and record. More than three decades, FBI homicide data shows patterns that stand out when parents kills their children. Three out of four child victims are younger than 5 years old. While it is thought that women kill more record show that fathers (men) are most likely to kill. On an average, six children are killed by abuse from a parent or guardian in Memphis, TN every year. Scarborough was just 4-months old when police say her father beat her to death because she wouldn’t stop crying. Within the past month 4 children under the age of two have been killed by their parents, police says this is a problem that we must get a handle on. So far this year five children have been killed by abuse or neglect. The numbers fluctuate, last year (2014) it was four, in 2013 there were 13 and this is just in one city, one small corner of the United States. The deadliest year in the past decade was 2008 with 14 children…
