Analysis Of The Los Angeles Times: Sparks Backlash Of Protests
According to the Los Angeles Times’ article, “Chaos Reigns as Trump’s Travel Ban Sparks Backlash of Protests, Confusion,” published in the January 31st, 2017 issue of the Los Angeles Times, President Trump’s travel ban associated with the Muslim citizens and refugees of seven major nations sparks a controversial and confusing environment across the globe. President Trump recently carried out an executive order which blocked refugees and Muslims from the countries of Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Libya from entering the U.S. Though many of the government's officials, along with U.S. representatives, thought that this action would help in protecting the United States borders, and ensuring a safe environment, it only worsened it. “Since its signing, the measure has led to the detention of more than 100 people who …show more content…
This order was not passed fairly, or with much thought behind its consequences. If all these people were carrying valid entry documents, then there is no reason to be stopping them from reaching their destinations. Secondly, families were not even given a second thought or say about this order before it was passed. Many relatives of Muslim people, and even the fellow Americans of the United States felt hurt and disappointed with the outcome that followed the order. Shay Soltani, a network engineer, shares her thoughts in the article by writing, “ I am so hurt by this… He [ President Trump] is against freedom of speech and the Constitution and everything I believe in as an American.” Soltani’s words hold an emotional depth that is very simply stated in the article, though carries more

The Rodney King case is widely known across the United States and even some parts outside of the U.S.. This incident occurred in the year 1991 in Los Angeles. King resisted arrest and got physical with the officers. This caused him to be shot with a Taser gun knocking him to the floor. The electricity takes over the central nervous system, leaving him incapacitated (Sergo) . Yet even after being completely helpless the officers repeatedly beat King with a baton and kicked him. Three officers were left free of charge and the jury never reached a verdict for the fourth. This decision led to the Los Angeles riots that concluded with two officers being charged guilty.…

Another right the bill violated was the Freedom of Thought, Belief, Opinion and Expression provision under section 2b of the Charter of Rights and Freedom. An individual can violate this bill simply by speaking their opinion and if the authorities believe that it’s in support of terrorist attacks, they will be detained. The violation of section 9 is also an important issue as Bill C-51 gives officers the legal power to arrest an individual without a warrant they feel may carry out a terrorist act. A way to combat these violations is for there to be more clarity and guideline for the authorities in the bill. The bill should illutrate better efforts in deciphering who is a suspect and who actually is not one. Though there is no clear-cut way to catch a terrorist, there should be some guidelines on typical suspicious behavior to avoid leaving everything to the discretion of the officers or authorities. An alternative for the arrests would be to arrest individuals that the authorities have evidence against. This would cause the authorities to do more research; however, there needs to be concrete proof that the person is conducting a suspicious activity to be in accordance with the people’s…

Although, I fundamentally disagree with the recent executive orders of our president. I acknowledge that migration is made up of an interconnected web of socioeconomic and political factors that makes the process complicated. With this in mind, closing off the borders of the U.S to refugees and immigrants may or may not lead to changes in safety but, one thing is certain, alienation and isolation of a specific group will spark outrage and create greater division in this country. Armed with knowledge and facts are the only way to combat against ignorance, prejudice and to avoid turning a blind eye. My hope is that some day soon clandestine migration will be a thing of the past and that finding a home away from home will not be so…

The most significant temporary effect of 9/11 would certainly be the impact of the security as it affected Arabs and Muslims in the country, attempting to gain citizenship. Though the security measures found out thousands of illegal Arabs and Muslims, only 11 were related to terrorist associations. The other hundreds of thousands legally in the country with a visa were then required to register with the authorities through a program called the National Entry/Exit System (NEERS). However, this program aroused several complaints. For citizens such as Mohammed G. Azam, a 26 Bangladeshi native who came to the U.S. when he was 9 years old, even with the termination of the long-term and ineffective program, he is still affected (Dolnick). His case outlasted the program, and even though he should legally be a citizen under the authority’s rules, he is given much trouble. His father gained residency and technically his children, if of age, would be residents too, but because of the length of his case, he has grown out of childhood. He is one of thousands in this situation, spending a large portion of his money on hearings and trial work. He should not be given so much trouble for something he has the right to. This entire program was a sort of “knee-jerk” reaction (Dolnick). Understandably, the country took as many safety precautions and security increases as possible, including the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (Lerner), the head of the NEERS program, but while some measures of security permanent in airports made sense, the NEERS program was only a hindrance, interrupting and corrupting lives of many well-meaning people, like Azam. Azam will not be attending his sister’s wedding, and also says, “One-third of my life has gone to this immigration process…I grew up her. This is my country”(Dolnick). The program has been terminated as of 2011, but that temporary measure, a reaction that should not have…

The TRO restricts the enforcement of President Trump's executive order widely known as the "Travel Ban" or "Muslim Ban". The executive order bans individuals from seven countries entry to the U.S.A. for 90 days, suspends the refugee program for 120 days and suspends Syrian refugees indefinitely. The order also states that exceptions may be made in some cases "when in the national interest". However, it does not provide any explanation as to what qualifies as being in the national interest, or who evaluates the cases. The order goes on to direct that when the refugee program resumes operation, refugees of certain religions would have prioritized applications. The government insisted that the bans were a matter of protecting the nation from terrorism. The bans were put into place immediately, causing a widespread and very controversial effect.…

The LA riots were the main theme for this week’s reading. Needless to say, it was a mortifying past for both the African Americans and the people of LA. The emotion explosion that accounted for thousands of injuries and billions of dollar worth of damage originated from the discriminatory decision of a court case. Rodney King, a middle-aged African American man, was pulled over on a highway for drunk speeding. He was brutally beaten by four police officers for no apparent reasons, and someone recorded the scene. The short clip soon hit the news, which shook the African American community and many questioned the legality of the police’s action.…

It was a worldwide protest that advocated human rights such as, women's rights, immigration, sexual orientation right, healthcare and more. Within his first hundred days, Trump began making executive orders. He ordered a hiring freeze and he even stopped the Trans-Pacific Partnership, while all of this caused controversy, none of it caused as much as his "extreme vetting" or "Muslim band" as some other called it. With this executive order banned immigrants to enter the U.S. that were coming from places such as Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. Thousands of people spoke out against this, including many celebrities. Some took action to help these immigrants with charities and others protested within airports where they were being detained. Now, there is much dispute over the authorized military strike against…

The answer is yes and no. The Constitution grants that “The executive power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America” (pg. 47). This one sentence of the constitution has been disputed since as early as 1793. After over a century of dispute it is affirmed “That the president does possess “residual” or “resultant” powers over and above, or in the consequence of, his specifically granted powers to take temporary alleviative action in the presence of serious emergency.” (pg. 49). So now, what qualifies as an “emergency”? President Trump could feel that the threat of rapists from Mexico and terrorists from the Middle East is too great to ignore, thus its an emergency and he must act. In reality, Trump is authorized to build a wall and revive the pipelines going through Native Land. The thing he is not authorized to do, is ban people based on religion. The constitution states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” (Amendment 1) thus Trump has directly contradicted the constitution, some will say that this is dictator-like behavior. But here's the thing, Congress can reverse it all, that is why this nation was built on checks and balances. While the President does not need the approval from congress to instate an executive order, “his powers may be augmented by congress”(pg. 50) if they feel the President has acted…

Imagine being at the center of one of the most racially controversial events in Modern American history. More specifically, imagine being a victim of police brutality. It seemed like an open-and-shut kind of case. All of the evidence was caught on camera. What plausible vendication would the Defense be able to make against the Prosecution? The Rodney King beating of 1991 was the breaking point for the African Americans and minorities of South Central Los Angeles and all over the country. Because this notorious, yet historical beating was caught on camera, it paved the way for an improved reformation of the Los Angeles Police Department or the LAPD. It also showed the unfair treatment of minorities, not only by police, but by regular people.…

Bloomberg said “our doors are open to everyone---everyone with a dream and a willingness to work hard and play by the rules” to show that our nation allows anyone of any religion into our country as long as they follow our laws. People from other countries and backgrounds that have come here for a better life aren’t getting what they want. They are witnessing the neglect, racism, and cruelty from others based on what they look like or what they believe in. These people feel left out because not everyone in this country has the same religion and beliefs therefore, the majority picks on the ones who are different. Specific religions are sometimes automatically blamed for certain crimes or…
