President George Washington in early 1796 had decided not to run for a third term as President of the United States and with suggestions from Alexander Hamilton, he drafted his “Farewell Address.” He tried to convey three points in his “Farewell Address.” The points were, his decision not to be considered for a 3rd term as President of the United States, his advice to the country to stand united, and his advice to the future leaders of the country concerning foreign policy. President Washington opened his speech by announcing that after giving a lot of thought to it, he had decided to retire and did not want to be considered for a 3rd term as President of the United States. The weight of the office was wearing on him, and he felt that it was time for him to step away from political life and allow someone else to accept the position. Washington was very grateful to those who placed him in the position. He also expressed gratitude to those who supported the decisions he made while in Office and attempting to make all the right choices to lead the Country in the right direction. He was grateful for the opportunities he had been given. He acknowledged that he could not have accomplished any of it without the support of the citizens. He urged to the citizens to care for and defend the constitution, as well as each other and that if they did that, the country would prosper. He reassured the Country that he was making this decision of his own free will and did not make this decision lightly. Washington felt he should stop his “Farewell Address” at that point, but his true concern and love for his Country prodded him on and he imparted further words of wisdom to his fellow countrymen. He urged all Americans to stay focused and not allow any other Country to break the American spirit and power American had established so far. Washington urged the American people to remain patriotic and loyal to their Country
